Nighthawk Tanto Edge

I have a Nighthawk and I love it. Fits my hand well, nice heft and size. However the edge on the non-serrated portion of the blade must be at a 45 degree angle. Which is odd because the serrated portion has a nice angle to the edge. Has anyone had the same thing? Is this normal?
Thanks JC

yep. my tanto arrived with the same angle. after some use (and dulling) i set to sharpen it at about 30 degrees. that turned out to be just about right after using the knife in various capacities such as cutting muddy-gritty drain tile, camp chores, and hacking pressed cardboard, etc. all i can say is that 30 degrees was the best compromise i have found thus far.

i also made a low profile (but stout) concealex sheath for the knife and added a lanyard hole--both have proven quite useful. this knife is tough to beat in the utility department (i.e. not afraid to use).

Jc,
I would guess that you have one that we made before the Edge 2000. We first made that knife to withstand the abuse of the Navy Seals, who's input helped with the design. After much campaning on my part, we started making them with a smaller included angle. Then we went to Edge 2000 and they should be 26 to 32 degrees.

Joe,

Why is the angle from 26 to 32? Wouldn't it be easier to keep it at, say, 30 degrees every time?

Alan,
If we could, we probably would make every edge exactly the same but since these are sharpended by hand, it is not possible. The edgers and sharpeners are one of the highest skilled positions in the production of our knives and they strive to keep both sides the same.
As long as each side is the same, it does not really matter if it is 26 or 32. It would take a lot of typing to explain why and i will, gladly, if you want.
It might open up some interesting discussions.
Take care,

Thanks for the quick response, Joe. I guess that I assumed (oops!) that they were sharpened by machine. I have trouble getting a perfect edge on my buck knives, so I don't doubt that your sharpeners are indeed the most skilled employees there at Buck Knives Inc.
