Niobium in place of vanadium? Any benift?

Kevin, do you think the extra bit of toughness comes from the little bit of silicon? I know that, along with nickel, is one of the "basic" alloying elements that can increase the toughness a bit.

I honestly haven't a clue. One thing I do know, metallurgy is a an exact science that needs a lot of training and experience to master. I'm already wearing enough hats, that's one I leave to the experts.
 
Silicon is present in most steels in small amounts. Many times it isn't even listed in nominal compositions. Becut has slightly lower nominal carbon content, along with the bit of Silicon. These will combine to make it a little tougher. The lower attainable hardness does t hurt either, though that is a symptom of the lower carbon content
