Nirvana - blade finish/corrosion spots

But if the blade is stone washer after that "should" scour the blade clean of the embedded material

I kinda doubt it's the media used, but more the fact that a blasted finish is just more prone to rust.
I think they use ceramic, or glass. Not sure what Spyderco used, but would think it was one or the other.

From my past experience(stated in my first post), and from what others and this KnifeArt page says, blasting makes a blade more prone to rusting.

Yeap totally agree glass or ceramic is probably what would be used

There is head blasting and shot peening

Two different processes

I don't know. My experience says those rust spots, even if you can manage to clean them, will come back once moisture is encountered.

If you use Flitz on a bead blasted blade it helps prevent corrosion. I bought a couple bead blasted knives years ago and they rusted badly. Since applying Flitz they don't rust much. I think polishing the surface really helps and something like Flitz will do that without scratching. There are plenty of polishing compounds out there that will do a great job.

I quit buying stonewashed and bead blasted knives because they rust. I have a Kershaw with a partially satin finished partially bead blasted blade and the satin part never showed rust. The BB part rusted... It was Elmax.Same thing happened to stonewashed S30V. My satin finished Spydercos don't rust like that.

Not Nirvana related but ,
My Delica Kahr with its stonewashed or whatever they do to it blade has developed small rust spots on the VG10 blade .
It has not been exposed to anything different than my other Delica's and they are as clean as the day they arrived ( including my ZDP and Hap blades which in theory should be more prone to corrosion )
What is the reasoning behind Stonewashed / Blasted finishes on blades ?
Aesthetics or function ?

Stonewashed won't show scratches/markings as easy as other finishes, and isn't rust prone. Also looks great IMO.

Bead Blasted. In this case I'm pretty sure it was used for aesthetics only to somewhat match the handle. I can see no other reason for it. A blasted blade finish is more rust prone, and doesn't hide scratches/markings that well.

Some companies, such as Busse, offers a blasted finish at a lower cost than their satin finish. They don't do it for aesthetics. Not worth the saving though, IMO.

Wondering if the blade finish was changed at all after the first production run...
Only handled a first run at a local knife shop...and more recently one that they probably received in October...to me the blade finish felt smoother to the touch on the more recent one...not sure if it was just my imagination or have there been any improvements already...newer one did not have any lockstick either...

Any news OP on whether or not the staining has gotten worse since the summer? Personally, I think it gives the knife character, but I also have not seen that issue on any of my S90V blades, so it has me wondering...

Spyderco is great at listening to customers and making improvements but it seems like changes are often implemented without any announcement. I'm waiting for confirmation that they've fixed the lockstick and improved the blade finish. I'd also like to see a switch to a hollow grind.

I cannot speak for the original run as I didn't own one. My new nirvana has absolutely no lock stick and the blade coating is very smooth. Comparing to pics of others it looks to be much less porous.

That's good to hear. I'm sure people would love to see a pic if you can take one. What do you think of the knife overall?

I wouldn't mind taking a picture at all! I sent the knife to BF member Pwrdbycotn to check out and should have it back in a few days.
I absolutely LOVE the knife and think Spyderco knocked it out of the park. The only thing I'd change is perhaps a satin finished FFG or hollow grind blade.

To improve the balance or for better cutting performance or both?

One more question - how is the detent strength?

A bit of both but I'm just dreaming. The detent is superb as is everything else on the knife! After handling just about every production folder out there it takes a lot to get me excited...the nirvana excites me!
If Spyderco came out with a Gen. 2 I'd suggest a satin FFG or Hollow grind and perhaps removing the lines on the scales for a cleaner look. Just one guys opinion however.
Have you handled one yet?

Nope haven't handled one but now you've got me thinking I need to!

Your mailbox is full...

Where did you get your Nirvana with the improvements?

Inbox cleared sorry about that. As I said I don't know that mine has any "improvements" so to speak just doesn't have any of the issues mentioned in this thread. I've heard a few members mention the newer variants not having lock stick or rust issues. I can't say for sure if Spyderco changed anything but I can say that my Nirvana came with no lock stick out of the box.
