Nitrobe 77

:D , I dont think that will be a very good idea, it is true that there are no values concernant toughness for this steel. I expect values a little higher than the CPM-154 and elmax , but I don't think it will come to the values of a 3v at 58 rc, 5160 and this kind of steels , so IMHO it will not be the best chopper.
But how good would it be?

My instinct tells me that he should be around the vanax in terms of toughness. Maybe a little more but not a lot. It's still nothing scientific. I'm also waiting for DeadboxHero DeadboxHero to tell us more when he will use it :D

I've finally got the profile cut and drilled and deburred ready for heat treatment. I'm excited to see how it compares to Vanax.

Some of these steels have knife makers that are associated with them like Nathan and 3v, Bob and D2.

A gentleman by the name of Des Horn is the "Nitrobe77 Guy"

He has been making knives out of it for well over a decade back when it was Erasteel that was making it before Damasteel.

From exchanges in emails, he was telling me about the preformance. It's tough and easy to sharpen like carbon steel but stain proof.

Did an awesome review on a design horn "slimvubu" folder in nitrobe77, I'd very much like to own one someday.

Here is a demonstration by Des Horn.

Carson h also used it extensively. Was his favorite steel

He made a bunch of really innovative folders and a few interesting fixed blades out of it. Until it wasnt available to him anymore.

Des Horn also awesome knife maker indeed. I love that video, gets me every time.

Reading that other thread was fun, really excited to play with it and drop the geometry under 0.010"bte

I am not qualified to get into technical discussions , but my practical experience with NITROBE-77 since it was first developed is that it's a really fine grained super tough blade steel at 61/62HRC. Most of my blades are ground super thin for slicing but a few ,such as the one in Marthinus's thread had a starting edge of about .4mm so quite thick. Not sure how it will perform if used in an axe so am keen to hear the result. When it comes to slicing or fine cutting as in wood carving I think it's exceptional. In the last 10 years I've not had one customer unhappy with the steel. One chap had some staining , but it turned out to be superficial and easily polished off with BRASSO.
I nearly forgot to mention that I heat treat flat , then grind my blades hard. This way I hope to reduce the risk of nitrogen loss from the surface and especially the edge area.
One error I picked up in the crazy video of me chopping a steel channel is that this blade was RWL-34 and not NITROBE-77 , that had undergone a double 2 hour high temperature temper (second bump) at 500celcius . This was a special project for our navy anti-piracy unit who wanted a pry bar for opening crates but also able , in an emergency, to cut the SS cable these chaps are lowered to the boats with. Hope his explains the crazy chopping of a steel bar.

I have (had) a Slimvubu in Nitrobe 77 from Des.
It's an excellent slicer, with a great sharp edge that helps its edge,
In daily practical use it performed very well IMO.
I did not sharpen it or do any heavy cutting tasks but I don't doubt it would perform just fine.
I would certainly buy and can recommend this steel.

regards

I'm about to try to test it. I would like to have the opinion of experienced people who would like to give it, do you think that with a blank of 3.2mm I will have to make me a gyutoh or a puukko to enjoy it the most. Thank you everyone.
