After two attacks on small children in Middletown NJ little was done with the coyotes . Now a third and fatal attack has been made on a child !! Strange attitudes abound in NJ .They don't want you to kill animals and the officials don't take it seriuosly. These were 4 and 5 year old children. Training ? How much can you do at that age ?

There's nothing in the news about the coyotes killing a child. They killed a dog, and they did attack two kids recently though. The coyotes are living on the Earle naval base, some people are claiming they were stocked there by the government. (Not sure if that's true) I do believe you can hunt coyotes here in NJ.

Sorry my error ! TV report wasn't very clear as they kept showing pictures of children and dogs !! In any case it won't be long ! How is it that the news media treats the death of a dog the same as that of a child ??

Every 5 year old should be packing heat. Little Johnny, you send those cayotees to hell. LOL.

Seriously though, they should not be allowed to threaten children. (Would not be allowed to threaten mine. Hey, trap em, snare em, get em with a bow, do whatever it takes to get rid of em before they get your kids.) If the county isn't taking this seriously, thats a damn shame.

BTW - I saw a later news report and watched carefully .They talked about how poor little Laura had been killed .Laura was the DOG ! no wonder I was confused !!

Hey Guys...

People would be shocked to know just how many Yotes are running around...

We blasted a nice female here back in the winter....It's Awesome to watch those animals come into a call....

Knocked to down with a .223 and that was it....

On a side note a mountain lion (Cougar of the 4 legged variety ) killed a little girl here in Ontario not too long ago...

Not too sure why more people don't hunt them regularly...

It is crazy, but I have encountered them in the city parks here in Columbus. They have shyed away when I have seen them, but the last one was not easily spooked. Rewilding my a$$.

Hey Guys..

CJ...

The real danger comes when they breed with stray dogs, called a Coydog..

They are Wild, but a little part of them stays domestic, so they have little fear of humans..

What has happened is that urban sprawl is slowly squeezing them into smaller and smaller places,, Areas where they once roamed are subdivisions now. This concentrates them into urban areas and they end up in trouble like downtown Chicago and downtown Detroit..

Somehow they make it into the city, and are now confused by the traffic, people and unfamiliar places,,

Each year their habitate is reduced, however they still keep having litters..

Theres only two ways of keeping them where they belong..

Stop urban sprawl or hunt them into managable numbers..

We are now seeing the effects of the closure of the Ontario spring bear hunt being closed down..
Black bear numbers are skyrocketing and they are moving into areas that haven't seen black bears in 50-100 years...

They have had black bear sightings literally minutes from Toronto in the Burbs, and they are now a meer 2-3 hours away from where I live 20 minutes from Detroit.

Black bear are native to S. Ontario, but haven't been in the area in probably 100 years... They are making their way back....

Black bears in urban centers = Trouble...

A little girl was attacked this last week in a place no one knew had bears...

Go figure!!

Will be interesting to see how many people get eaten by bears this summer...

NJ coyotes should be shot on sight, too many people in NJ just waiting to get bitten. A lot, if not most,(at least in Warren and Sussex Counties) in NJ have rabies. The coyote that bit one of the girls had rabies, and the poor kid had to get all those rabies shots. As one of the previous posters stated, they get pretty bold; they just won't "shoo" away.

Black bear around these parts now, too. A young adult male was seen along the Big Darby just outside town a year or two ago.

According to the NYS-DEC crosses with coyotes are rare [this from DNA studies] There are just a few coyote/dog crosses and just a few coyote/wolf crosses [these in the nothern borders of the state]. NE coyotes can be much larger than the SW ones, 70 lbs is not unusual !!....Black bears rarely are dangerous UNLESS they've been fed by people !!!

I guess my thought is that honey bees hurt/kill far more people than coyotes.

I live in the NW suburbs of Chicago and we have LOTS of coyotes around my place. Its quite common to hear them cry and howl at night. We enjoy their chorus. The only way I can really "see" them is using a spotlight at night when I hear them howling. Their eye-glow will give them away pretty quickly.

I have two young kids and two dogs that would be little match for coyotes (not that their small, but that they wouldn't know how to fight to defend themselves) and we've had no problem. A few years back I was working on my lawn and was shocked to see a coyote walk past me across my driveway - maybe 20 feet away. He wan't aggressive or at all worried about my presence. Just passing through.

My neighbors did have "something" attack her black lab (a big one) and he got a bit hurt. They say it was coyotes, but I've always wondered if it was stray dogs. I'll never know.

I guess I figure they do a better job at controlling mice, rats, muskrats, etc... than anything I could hope for, and they haven't come close to hurting me or mine.

... haven't come close to hurting me or mine.
Thank God... I hope your luck holds out. If I see any around my home, I will take appropriate action, with no second thoughts. If my kids ever got bit, and I knew in advance that I could have prevented it in some way, that would be rough for me to live with.

Mainly because they taste like... well... a Cat.

Coyotes attacking humans is a rare occurance. They are much more of an issue to the family dog / cat, or if you have livestock of some kind. Newborn calfs are extremely vulnerable. Can be a lot of $$ out of a rancher's pocket. I agree though the condition should be studied and population shoul be reduced BEFORE there is a problem.

Everything has it's place and coyotes are only filling a nitch left open by mans mismanagement of the land. Usually coyotes will rarely attack a human child, but it does happen. When I lived in So. Lake Tahoe on the California side, a man shot a coyote in his front yard, with a .22. The reason he shot it was that it had attacked his 3 year old daughter as he was standing there with her. What happened to the hero father? He was arrested, convicted of a felony discharge of a firearm in city limits, lost his gun and the right to own any others ever again and spent a year in jail, losing his job, losing his home and losing his wife and daughter who left him and went back to the big city. As far as children getting attacked by any animal, it's their parents place to watch over them when they know that there are dangerous animals about. The attacks won't lessen or go away, but safeguarding against attacks with fences and a watchful, protective eye will certainly lessen the effects, if and when they do happen.

BTW, I found Mtn. Lion to be quite tasty. Prepared properly it is excellent table fare.

Good points. Idiotic about the guy defending the girl.

Regarding the Lions... Let's go hunt some then! I'd love to try some.

Normark - So there is a confirmed sighting of a cougar in ontario?? I swear i saw a dead one in the river behind my parent's place, and no one believed me. I also saw some guy with a bow at the whirlpool about 10 years back talking about hunting cougars.

I see coyotes around where I live here and there. Not too concern with them since they are pretty small compare to my dog.
