We're waiting for a news conference by the Governor of New Jersey.
Is he resigning?
There's a reported Sexual harrassment suit by a male aide. The male Golan Cipel, Isreali citizen was hired as a security head with no security background.

press conference is starting!!!

He acknowledges homosexuality!!!
"I am a gay American"

He admits affair with man!
Consentual relationship will defuse the lawsuit.

It was a very screwed up administration!!
I'm not a fan of his.
Tom

Resignation effective Nov. 15th
Nothing wrong with being gay. Just McGreedy is a crook.
Sigh...So was Whitman, republican, a crook.

Really sad story. He came in claiming he'd clean up corruption, and lost several close aides as corrupt. Politics is the art of making deals, and this was not the worst administration we've had -- Jim Florio set the all-time record for that. But it baffles me that a politician these days would imagine he could get away with this sort of subterfuge.

Why is he resigning as of November 15 -- so the special election won't be held concurrent with the national election, and maybe help the Republicans?

That he's gay just throws a complication in the emotional reactions we'll see to this. If his affair was with a woman, he would have been in the same kind of trouble.

N.J. Governor Resigns, Admits He Is Gay

In a stunning declaration, Gov. James E. McGreevey acknowledged that he had an extramarital affair with another man and announced his resignation Thursday. "My truth is that I am a gay American," he said.

"Shamefully, I engaged in adult consensual affairs with another man, which violates my bonds of matrimony," the married father of two said. "It was wrong, it was foolish, it was inexcusable."

The Democrat said his resignation would be effective Nov. 15.

McGreevey said he would step down because his secret - both his sexuality and his affair - leaves the governor's office vulnerable.

The former suburban mayor took office 2 1/2 years ago, and despite inheriting a $5 billion budget deficit, he steadfastly refused to boost income taxes for most New Jerseyans, instead raising taxes on millionaires, casinos and cigarettes.

But he has been dogged by several scandals involving fund-raising.

Among those caught up in recent scandals were his first chief of staff and former counsel; a top Democratic fund-raiser and former high school classmate; and real estate developer Charles Kushner, McGreevey's biggest campaign contributor, who was charged with trying to thwart a federal campaign-finance investigation by luring a grand jury witness - his own brother-in-law - into a compromising position with a prostitute and sending video and photos to the man's wife.

McGreevey would be the second governor to resign in weeks, following the resignation in June of Connecticut GOP Gov. John Rowland amid corruption investigations and threats of impeachment.

McGreevey rose from suburban mayor to state chief executive by his tenacious pursuit of party politics, maintaining a power base days after he narrowly lost to Republican Christie Whitman in 1997.

McGreevey never truly stopped that campaign until he won in November 2001, beating Republican Bret Schundler by 15 percentage points.

Born in Jersey City, McGreevey graduated from Columbia University in 1978. He earned a law degree from Georgetown University in 1981 and a master's degree in education from Harvard University a year later.

After briefly serving as a county prosecutor, McGreevey became a lobbyist for a pharmaceutical company, then a state government official. While in the Legislature, McGreevey voted for Gov. Jim Florio's $2.8 billion tax hike that prompted a voter rebellion against Democrats.

Pundits say that he'll make his future mark as a gay rights spokesman. How sad!

They also claim that the Nat'l Democrats set the resignation date of Nov 15th so no interrim election and minimizing negative democrat fallout.

Only in Jersey!! Maybe California.

But a sad day for New Jersey and McGreevy's family.

I just finished reading that article over on MSN. Esav stated, "That he's gay just throws a complication in the emotional reactions we'll see to this. If his affair was with a woman, he would have been in the same kind of trouble."

That is totally true. McGreeve stating that he's gay has no bearing on his corruption or attempt at side-stepping a sexual harassment suit. Let's stick to the pertinent facts, please, politicians

I really couldn't figure it out. Is he trying to imply that his problems as Governor are the result of his personal sexual confusion? Are we now going to accept confusion over one's sexual preference as a defense? Does sexual confusion now become a disability? I don't know.

I looked in on a gay rights forum, and sure enough, they are all sympathetic, except for the gay-bashers who troll in places like that!

I really couldn't figure it out

It's confusing even to those who follow NJ politics.

Rumors about McGreevey's orientation have been following him for a long time, certainly since his run for governor versus Whitman a few years ago. There was some story about his first wife, who left him and fled back to Canada with a daughter and wouldn't talk about him at all, but IIRC she showed up when he was installed as governor, so it sounded like sour grapes.

The story being floated right now is that he tried to push his bodyguard for the role as NJ Homeland Security czar, which would be a great place from which to ladle out federal gravy. The bodyguard was a foreign national who couldn't get get a security clearance from the FBI, and apparently had no real qualifications, so after an outcry the man was shunted off into another state position, no pun intended, albeit a 6 figure one. Scuttlebutt is that McGreevey was about to be named in a same-sex harrasment suit, and it may be a result of this previous relationship. I suspect that's why the public revelation was wrapped up in the resignation, as a way to deflect charges later on. Just specualtion, of course.

As Ed notes, lately several of McGreevey's closest friends have been under investigation or indictments for a variety of acts relating to fundraising, etc., and in an attempt to use a prostitute to entrap someone. Some of the accused are 20 year plus personal friends of McG's, and had this been say NY with a greater media scrutiny he'd have been in the national news a lot sooner. The guy's approval ratings in NJ were abysmal, but as is normal in this state it wouldn't matter much when it came to running business as usual.

As to the timing, it was explained today that if he quits now, or before Nov 15 or so, NJ would have a special election and pick a new governor to serve out the balance of the term. NJ doesn't have a lieutenant governor to fill in, so if there's less than a year of a term left the state Senate president acts as governor. So this way it preserves the seat for the Democrats for now, and more particularly through the fall election: it's not impossible that an anti-McG backlash could turn this state for Bush, which would mess the Democrat national strategy up real good.

It's reminiscent of what happened when Torricelli withdrew from the Senate race, although there clearly Bobby T's bailout happened after the date when the ballot was fixed. The Supreme Court shrugged and put Lautenberg on the ballot any way.

That was one incredible scam. The Democrats will cry till the next millennium comes that GWB stole the election with the help of the Supreme Court, but at least there the procedure was legitimate, even if one side or the other was going to end up feeling wronged.

In NJ, the court simply ignored the law. And resurrected Lautenberg, who has distinguished himself as nothing more dignified than an obstacle in the Senate since he's returned. Frank Lautenberg is a former NJ Senator who retired. When his erstwhile colleague Robert Torricelli was found to be too corrupt even for this state, Lautenberg was shoe-horned back in to keep the seat Democratic.

The Judge who usurped NJ constitution was then reappointed by McGreevey. She then had tenure and her retirement pay.
Another sellout, without honor.
Business as usual in NJ

Supposedly he did this because his lover(ech!) was trying to blackmail him and threatening sexual harrassment lawsuit, not because he was confused, just saving his own butt. This way he can try and come back somewhere someday.

They become power brokers and work (groan) behind the scene.
Just another day in Trenton.

Weekly World News reports "Dick" (hmmm)Cheney is the other wo/man. :barf:

Totally off base, Teacher. I have the National Enquirer reporting Janet Reno as the other man.......

(Buh-bye Rep Points - Hello libel suit. (And I actually liked the job Janet Reno did!))

The way I read it is that the Democratic Machine wants John Corzine to be the next Governor. Right now he's running the fund raising committee for John Kerry. He would not have the time to put a campaign together at such a short notice. Hence the hasty resignation, so the Dems keep the seat as Governor, and have time to prep Corzine for next year's election. Of course, that's just my opinion.

Ken

Because Corzine can buy the election, or at least a good part of it, just like he bought his Senate seat!

Ken

He can't can't buy what the electorate won't sell. Unfortunately, a lot of people are dumb enough to buy it when the politicians pay them with their own tax money.

Corzine just sweetened the pot. I wonder if he's any poorer for having spent all that money?
