Has anyone on here ever hiked the Batona Trail in the Pine Barrons? I'm looking for more detailed information on it, it looks like a goods. Are there any fees or trail rules that I know about. I'm thinking about hiking the entire thing in the next couple of weeks. Anyone know how good it is or of any other good trails in the NJ area that would be good three or four day hikes?

Appalachian Trail runs through NJ into PA in the NW part of state(NJ). Real beautiful area.

I was looking at that too. Know of any good places to start? I want to do an up and back trip of about six days, more or less. Three up and three back. I did an over night trip last year, or maybe the year before :o. It's pretty bad when days start bleeding together but years . I don't remember where I started.

No information on the Batona trail though? It looks like a nice trail that I could completely do in a week but I'm not sure about camping because the Lebanon State Park's page says that camping is closed until March but I wasn't sure if that was just for the reserved campgrounds or along the trail which goes through the park.

A good, convenient place to start is the NPS visitor center right on Rt.80. near the Delaware Water Gap. From there, one direction goes toward Pennsylvania and the other direction toward High Point. Either way is very scenic..........http://www.njskylands.com/odhikeaptrl.htm

+1  I'm doing the Dunnfield Creek hike to Sunfish Pond tomorrow, if it ever stops raining here. :)

GW, I'll take some scouting pics.

THat's near Mt. Tamany isn't it? I've done that recently, it's a beautiful hike but a day hike, not really what I was looking for, I was going to do one of the other trails in the next couple of weeks to get a warm up on winter hiking. Last time I did it a saw a momma bear and two cubs at the top of Mt. Tamany. One of the cubs was freakin' close (like ten feet). I didn't get that close to momma and the other cub but I saw them. Froze up too much to get a good close-up picture but I got a blurry picture of the big one laying around here somewhere. This was in July of either this or last year.

Batona Trail has no fees off season that I Know of. You may have to pay a park fee memorial day through labor day to park in some of the lots. The trail goes through two or three state parks Byrne (formerly Lebenon), Wharton and I believe bass river, So any of these places are a good staring point or an info source. The campgrounds are in Wharton I believe.

I have only hiked small sections of it, but it is flat easy going from what I have seen. There are several barona trail clubs and groups that could probably give you more info

Thanks, I'll check that out.

That's the one. It does hook up with the AT for longer distance hikes.

Have fun on the trail. :)

I guess my real question is, would anyone raise a hissy fit if I just stopped and set up on the side of the trail?

The odds are you wouldnt be disturbed, I have seen several debris huts and lean-to frames along the trail. but this is against policy, there are campgrounds that are pretty remote, only accessible by trail. these you do need a permit for and they are available at ranger stations.

I only hike a portion of it in Wharton state park. If you don't mind the sugar sand on the trail, since it get pretty tiring walk on it after a while, it's not that bad. Lots of trails thatead off of it so I would definitely suggest a good gps withots of batteries, a good map like a topo, and a good compass. I haven't hiked it for about 4 years now so things could have changed. The pine water is something you don't want to drink unless it's an emergency or if you filtrate/boil it really good. It taste pretty nasty to me because you can taste the iron and tannin from the pine trees. As for camping off the side if you needed to. I would stay off the trail just because I heard of the pineys, which the people who live in the pines, like to mess with you sometimes. I would also reccomend you bring a bear fogger of some sort. A couple of guys at work told me last night that coyotes are a big thing in pines now. So make preps for any kind of encounter of four legged creatures. I am sure if forgot something. Someone else will chime in. Definitley go to the visitor centers to get updates of any dangers on the trail or immediate area of where you will be travelling.

I'm out there all the time what do you need?

For an overnighter, start at the visitor center, get the $4 permit and head North to Lower Forge camp.

If you want to do the whole 56 miles, stealth camp. We do it all the time. Just get a map and don't camp near the roads. Nobody will be the wiser.

If you want to camp in the spring, let me know, I will go for a few days.

BTW, this is Primtiveman, My account got screwed up and the webmasters fail to respond to my requests for help.

I was going to do the whole thing both ways, I figured that'd kill about a week. I may do the Appalachian trail this winter but I'll probably still do this one on a day hike to try it out, I got a lot of time on my hands for the next few months.

I hiked some of it last year with primitiveman. I'm from DE and that was the first trip to the Pine Barrens for me. Look up primitiveman here on the forums and shoot him and email. I followed him to the parking lot and he new the area really well.

Had to change my name to Raisedby Wolves because the webmasters here seem to be oblivious.

So......

It is me..Raisedby wolves, AKA Primitiveman

We should get a few of us together for a Spring overnighter!

Hey Carl - glad to see you here.

I'm up for an overnighter. That was a cool part of NJ that I have never seen before.
