Hey all,

Thought you all might like to have a look at my new coral rucarta rancher. Some number of us lobbied AG to make these and they just hit his website about a week ago. It's a terrific looking knife with great utility. Closed length is 3-5/8" with a blade length of 3". Very slim and easy in the pocket. All stainless steel. I know I'm going to enjoy mine.

Very nice - I like it.

Could you tell me what the pull is like? Also after looking at the pic on their site, they don't show it closed - wondering how much blade is exposed when closed and if it is enough to pinch open.

Thanks cwood! I have been waiting for this one. I gave my AG R. Rancher away on my last diving trip expecting to get a replacement when these show up :) One of the slickest Soddie's I have ever handled:thumbup:

Nice!
I have to get one. I have the Cowboy.
These are my favorite slip-joint folders.

On his website, AG lists the steel for the new Rucarta Rancher as 8Cr15MoV, while the older Ranchers with Delrin are listed as having 8Cr13MoV steel. Does anyone know if this is really a different, higher chromium steel, or just a typo?

8Cr15MoV is its own steel. The biggest difference is in the chromium. Other than that it looks to have equal or slightly higher concentrations of the same elements as 8Cr13 except for a little less carbon. The chart I checked also said 8Cr15 is considered an equivalent to AUS8.

Above is a picture from the side for those who were interested.

Chris-

Thanks - just what I needed to see. Plenty of blade showing as you said, and great to hear it is dead easy to open. Ohhh my poor credit card.........

The question of the steel type (8Cr13/15MoV?) came up in an older thread (linked below) about the original Rancher/Cowboy models from A.G. Russell. At least then, the description on the web site was erroneous, according to Phil Gibbs (designer for A.G.):

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/844067-Sodbuster-amp-Rancher

Guys, I believe the 8Cr15MoV was a typo, as I've never seen that designation anywhere. Besides the Moly and the Vanadium, 8Cr13MoV has a little Nickel as well.

Absolutely correct black mamba!

Not only was it a typo.....
It was MY typo :o

Don't know if it's actually changed, in steel type. But the possibility of a typo may still be there...

(BTW, on the earlier versions, the back side of the blade tang was etched as '8Cr13MoV'. Don't know if the same convention is used with this new model.)

All that aside, to the OP, that's a beauty in coral rucarta.

David, I forgot I had asked that back when, but I looked up the same chart that Nate did, and unlike before, there now is an 8Cr15MoV steel listed.
So maybe they switched steels, or maybe they never corrected the copy. Both steels are very similar, anyway. Just curious.

No dispute there, as to the existence of either of the steels. But, as to whether the site listing was erroneous as to which A.G. used for this knife, or not, that's what I was attempting to address. Agreed, the steels look essentially identical, save for the trade-off between tiny amounts of carbon & chromium. I wouldn't fret either way. :)

OP,

I've been looking at the AG Rancher for a while now but I was wondering about the size. Is the blade very wide? If you have the time, could you post a picture of the AG Rancher beside another knife (preferably popular) or reference item?

Thinking about picking one up i a week or so. How is the lock up? And how do the scales feel? Ive never felt Micarta or Rubcarta.

Very nice! I have question also: do these (and the new wood handle version) have a higher polish? It seems like it from pictures I've seen, but maybe it's just an illusion?

I'll take a couple of reference pics later today for those interested. I don't think this knife is any more polished than the original black rucarta one I had. Can't say about the rosewood version, I haven't seen one. I'd say the scales feel smooth, not grippy. Lock up is solid, IMO. Pull is quite easy.

I have all four versions of the Rancher and they all very nice. The pull on all of mine is golilocks( not too easy and not too hard) and I'm able to pinch open the blade instead of using the nail nick. Fit and finish is excellent on all with the exception of my new Coral Rucarta Rancher, it has a minor flaw by the shield. It's no big deal to me but it's the only one that has something that anyone could really bitch about, still top notch imo. I don't really notice any difference on the polish of the knives. I'll try to get pics of all four together with a Case Sodbuster JR for comparison.
