NKD, AG Russell Rancher in coral rucarta

Here are some photos to help with scale for those interested. The rancher is pictured with a Case 7 dot 6347HP and a quarter.

Sorry for the late pics, been a busy weekend. Here are the four A.G Russell Ranchers side by side with a Case Sodbuster Jr for size reference.

That looks great. I think I'll have to pick one or two up - both sizes look good, and the price is nice.

trevytrev,

Great pictures! How do the different handle types feel on the rancher? I've never had a knife in delrin or rucarta. Which is your personal favorite?

They all feel great, they are all finished so smooth they feel very similar. My Favorites would be the Black & Yellow, then Red and Wood but that's just b/c they are favorite in regard to color, not feel. You won't be disappointed with one of these knives. Trevor~

There's such a range of color for the coral red between the examples shown here. And the images on the AG Russell site make it almost look mahogany brown. Is this just a trick of the lighting or are some runs much more red than others?

I only own one Coral Rancher but I think you are just seeing different peoples camera lighting and white balances throw off the color. The color is more burgundy then red, im sure they are pretty uniform in color.

Thanks Trevor. in your pictures it looks like Marlboro maroon. It almost looks like woodgrain on the AG Russell site (at least on my monitor). Burgundy is good. Muddy brown is...not so good.

Are you certain that you are not looking at their Rosewood version of the Rancher on their site? It is brown and has wood grain.

Is it just me, or does that catalogue photo look nothing like Trevor's coral in the group pic. It's closer to Cwood's, but still very different.
this is a color AG Russell says is their most popular so presumably it looks more like Trevor's pics than the catalogue.

Buying one may be the only way to answer this for myself!

I wouldn't worry too much. I have at least 3 of A.G.'s 'coral rucarta' knives, going back to '90s vintage, I believe. Between those, and the great pics of more recent knives posted here by other members, I haven't seen much, if any, variation in color in any of them. The 'coral' description seems about right; all seem to be in that range between what I'd call 'burgundy' and 'maroon', maybe with a little 'blood red' in there somewhere. Very attractive stuff. Whatever recipe he specs for the color, or whatever supplier source he's tapped into, it seems very consistent to me. The vendor pics on the site always have seemed a little different, colorwise (maybe a little muted in color saturation, or 'warm' in terms of color temperature). But, when in-hand, they always display more 'pop' in the red, as expected.

BTW, the color shown in Trevor's own pics above looks pretty much dead-on, as compared to the examples I have.

And, as with any of his knives, his satisfaction-guaranteed warranty is pretty much bulletproof, if you get one that somehow isn't up to your expectations.

I'm happy to support makers with that kind of commitment to customer satisfaction. It's all but disappearing. I sent an enquiry to the company about a vintage knife and it's amazing to get a response from A.G. himself.
