Just for kicks I decided to refinish my user NMFBM. The paint removal ease was a nice surprise. But, the surprise I found sealed under the paint was not so nice. A thin layer of surface rust bout 1 ½ inches sq on either side of the blade. Harmless I’m sure, but there nonetheless. Annoying.

So, if you think you paint is sealing out corrosion, think again. Could be sealing it in, too!

Anyway, the naked surface color an texture looked the same over most of the blade so I decided to try some blueing. I know bare INFI does not take blueing but the decarb layer should. I got out some cold blue (Dicropan T-4), put some liberally on a swab and proceeded to rub it all over the blade. I let is sit for 5 minutes and rinsed it off. The blade was completely and evenly blue/black now. I tried rubbing the blue off with dry and oiled shop towels and no blue came off on them. So far, so good. Looks like it took!

Just a fun experiment. But seems to work. We'll see how long it lasts.

Very interesting. Looks good. You'll have to update this thread after you use her a few times.

Thought that might happen with the decarb layer. Do you have any pictures of the rust patterns ? It would be very helpful.

No pics or the red stuff. Didn't think of it. Very fine layer anyway, nothing to worry about.

As for the new blueing, heavy use my wear through the decarb and blue and maybe it won’t re-blue in those spots where bare polished INFO is left. But for now it seems pretty good and I like it so much better than paint.

I was just curious if it was from surface wear or if someone didn't wash their hands after lunch and got some quality fingerprints on the blade during manufacturing. ;)

I shouldn't have brought it up. My guess, pre-paint prep. It was under the paint, on part of the blade where the paint was not even worn at all. Does makes me wonder about all the painted blades I have stuffed in the safe though!

That looks really good! I've been meaning to strip mine seeing as the coating is getting pretty ugly, but was dreading refinishing the blade, this'll be perfect.

Looks good. I'm also interested to see how it holds up! Please keep us posted. :)

Black oxide or Tennifer? Maybe Swamp Rat could copy the Tennifer process and call it the Jennifer process. ;)

I have a Ratweiler that looks like that after I stripped it. No bluing. Just paint stripper.
