NMFBM Bowie

Hey... I guess that's my old NMFBM that I stripped lol. Now you put me to shame, baaaaadly. I was kind of ghetto about that one, but it was for a user. Your work is really remarkable.

"flattened out the tang"

Do you have a surface grinder now? How do you thin the whole blade? Have you ever drilled holes in the handle to lighten the knife and improve it's balance?

btw, those are really nice pics, as well.

Someday I will own a surface grinder. I still just do everything on my KMG and Grizzly Belt grinder.

I usually flatten out the tang to either remove imperfections or to try and blend in the the ricasso with my primary grind and plunge lines.

I did not really thin the whole blade on this one. I just reground it enough to to establish my own grind lines to do my satin and enough to get my zero convex.

I have drilled holes in hardened steel and it is a pain. I usually end up chipping my expensive carbide drill bits. I buy them in bulk these days ;)
I have lightened the tangs of a few INFI pieces by tapering them. I have drill out the tangs on the knives that I make before heat treating to change the balance.

ie. This little bowie has around 15-20 1/4" holes drilled out under the tang. Of course you can't tell because it is under the handle slabs.

Tapering the tang can't be easy, either. AFAIK, the BCS won't do it.

So I have this fat FBM and ... :D

Yeah tapering the tang of harden steel is also a pain. I tapered the tang on an AK once and it was not fun. Just have to use really sharp new belts to make it go quicker.

I was considering drilling the tang and then tapering the tang of my BMe to reduce weight and bring the weight way forward. Just never got around to it.

I'll let you experiment on mine ... :D

Forget the kenuki gata tachi or the kazari-tachi on my desktop. You have managed to add some real class to this design. Jerry should put you on his payroll!
