NMSFNO scar?

Hard to tell, but almost looks like a crack. Might be worth sending in to the shop to have them do their inspection on it. I thought I remember reading that they do penetrant inspection so they could rule out or confirm if it's that.

Sorry I can't help further as to what caused it. It's hard to say without getting a better look at it.

If I had to guess I would say it is part of a casting that was not cleaned up during machining but I do not think Busse uses cast blanks. It certainly looks like a center line so maybe it is done during machining and did not get cleaned up prior to coating. Busse would probably be the one to ask.

I'd ask Busse about it. I don't think it is a crack. Too... straight. But something seems off.
That's a good point. Reminds me of the mark left after a WEDM has cut into it but I don't know what a WEDM would have ever been doing next to a blank, let alone in this orientation! Puzzling for sure.

In the spirit of how Jerry Busse likes to do things, I propose the OP make this a contest and whoever guesses correctly as to the nature and origin of the defect, wins the knife. 😂

Looks like a centerline scribe line to me. Possibly a blank used for set up or one checked for QC. I’ve seen a lot of deep lines covered by thick powder coat so it may not have been given any thought towards removal.

I added new photos to the Imgur gallery, I don't know why only the link appears, because when editing and previewing the post I normally see photos to scroll.

Going back to the knife, the previous owner bought it here on BF and removes the coating, because it was worn out.

Is it more like a crack or more like a raised lip or ledge on one side of the spine that stands a little proud of the other?

I will ask what a couple others have asked .............Have you contacted Busse ?

Rather than speculate why not ask the guy who made it ?

have you seen this post at the top of this forum ?

Can you please tell us the blade thickness T Tasmanian_Devil

Do any of you other NMSFNO owners have a step at mid-depth of your holes? (mine doesn’t)

Maybe it’s just an optical illusion… can you please clarify on this Tasmanian_Devil?

My NMSFNO still has its original coating, in decent shape. So not stripped. I cannot see a step in the holes.

weird...

wonder if a pic from the obverse side would show misalignment in the around 2 o'clock position? if it does, it could hint at two blanks <or two halves of blanks> being sandwiched together

I saw this post, but I don't actually have a problem with the knife in terms of warranty or anything like that :) I asked the question out of pure curiosity if anyone has encountered something like this. The knife will work anyway like my other Busse knives, so aesthetic issues are not important to me, and if the knife gives up in any way during work, then I will think about it :)

Blade thickness is 6,3-6,4mm, and yes, there are steps at mid depth of the holes. It looks like the hoes were drilled on both sides and moved a little.

It's visible only from the Busse logo side.

Send it in to the shop Attn: Garth and I will take care of it.

Thank you Garth, I'll consider it, although insured shipping from Poland will be a bit expensive :/
