And it's mostly medication for me. And while oiling and "keeping it dry" sounds simple enough, bear this in mind: It's often so damp here that keeping the knife dry isn't feasible, and wiping it down doesn't MATTER because everything is soaked. Basically, I'd rather have a knife that I can use in the show, rain, and damp and not need to baby it with oil and constant maintenance for fear of it decaying.
The BIGGER issue I have is that even on coated knives, the EDGE will rust, and when that happens, the careful sharpening, stropping, and maintenance of the edge is all for nothing. It completely destroys my hard work and dulls the knife, often before I can even use it heavily.
Finally: I seem to pit steel rather than patina or rust it. This leads to serious damage relatively quickly and is the reason I won't use anything that isn't stainless unless I have no other choice in the matter.
