No Bark River Knives forum?

Bark River made the Clax.
The Clax is awesome.
Got one for me, my brother and my dad, because it is just that amazingly awesome.
(well, actually my wife bought the Clax for me...)
Having brought the Clax into the world, they could make the rest of their knives out of old soup cans and I'd still say they made a valuable contribution to the world. :D

I dont think that it was anything too revolutionary or a new design. Its basically a Smatchet with an oversized fuller. I think W.E. Fairbairne should get credit for this design myself.

None of that diminishes the glory of the Clax. ;)

Which is a slightly different blade shape than the Smatchet...

It's a mini-Smatchet, but has the same shape as the big one.

Clax chops quite well.

If you cannot admire the glory of the Clax, then I feel sorry for you.
But I won't feel bad on your behalf, because the joy of the Clax is upon me! :)

And the Smatchet was based on the Joubert knife the 9th Battalion of the Royal Welch Fusiliers used in WWI.

Where do we send that credit?

Many companies can't handle even mild criticism. Often they operate a private forum for fanboys only where any perceived criticism isn't tolerated and bans are handed out like candy.

I think it has to do with the fact that some people like some things and some people don't like some things and then some people are just batshit crazy, can't forget about those people, and when all these people with their varying opinions start talking about some things things get f-ed up, by which I mean contentious, acrimonious, mean-spirited, when really what people should do is just relax, argue less, listen more and have fun because at the end of the day life is too short to quibble about this thing or that thing or my thing or her thing or his thing.

Nice collection! :D

Yes, Bark River is active on another forum, they are also active on Facebook. I like Bladeforums, I like some groups on Facebook too. It's all good.

Humans and their works are inherently complex. This is the weak point of both fanboys and haters. To take an absolutist attitude toward a manufacturer because of (anything) misses a lot, especially with a prolific or controversial owner or designer involved.

This is typical of Bark River discussions. Or Strider discussions. Or even some Kershaw / ZT discussions. Mention the company and the haters link to the history books. How about responding to current comments by satisfied customers without trashing the thread by bringing up once upon a time?

If you have a personal experience to share, start your own thread, or refute a specific point. Don't link to an old thread. Live in the present.

The reason I started this thread was just that - personal experience. That, and wanting to hear other people's personal experience with Bark River knives

The mail gal showed up today and brought me a Bark River Bravo 1.25 (5" blade x 0.217" thick, 9.875" OAL) in CPM 3V and olive canvas micarta. I have owned the knife for about six hours now and no, I have not cut down any Oak trees with it yet - but overall, I am happy with this knife. It showed up in a corrugated cardboard box, packed in a priority mail bubble wrap shipping envelope. The sheath was sealed in a small plastic bag with the knife wrapped separately in tissue paper. When I unwrapped it, the blade was in a protective cardboard sleeve. When i pulled it out of the sleeve, the blade had a coating of light oil. I was glad to see that the people at Bark River package and ship their knives properly to protect them from damage and to guard against rust or corrosion.

Is it perfect? No. But pretty close to it. The only flaw I could find in the knife was a burr in one of the hollows of the jimping on the spine of the blade. It is minor flaw and IMHO is not worth the hassle of sending it back for a replacement, as it is something I can fine tune myself with a jeweler's file. Other than that one minor flaw, the knife is damn near perfect. The satin finish on the blade is flawless and it is razor sharp.

The sheath that came with it is a good quality, serviceable tanned leather sheath; not up to the level of a $100+ custom leather sheath, but not a piece of junk either; farfrom it, in fact. I see no serious issues with the craftsmanship or quality control of this knife and sheath; I think they are well worth the $240 American I paid for them. Perhaps there were some more serious craftsmanship and quality control issues with Bark River knives in the past; I don't know as this is my first Bark River. Based on what I see in this knife, it won't be my last.

Disclaimer:
I am in no way affiliated with or employed by Bark River knives. I'm just a satisfied customer, that's all. :D

Thanks. :)

If you keep posting that picture I'll be forced to make you a sheath to replace that awful looking thing. It hurts the eyes.

The other side of the sheath looks better. ;)
It was a learning experience, and by the end of sewing it, I had figured it out...unfortunately, the belt loop was sewn on at the beginning, before I had learned anything. :D
It sure is sturdy though; 1/4" thick leather.

I would go with eyelets to allow for easy baldric style carry if I were doing it again, as it weighs down a belt something fierce. Carried with a strap though, and it ain't bad at all.

I love my Bark River Adventurer II. Right now it's my favorite knife. One day I will buy another Bark River, when I am able to choose one out of the many.

I like my mini-bushcrafter. I agree that it doesn't make as much sense for them to have a sub here, as the time needed would be for little return. Lots of fans to help point those who are searching, in the right direction. But there is enough potential drama to make it a headache. Mostly those stirring the pot. It might be fun, but there are plenty of bark river threads to keep us entertained.

Why bother with a sweeping statement that doesn't apply? Perhaps you are thinking of other makers who have left the forums? But companies that cannot handle criticism quickly go out of business, because at the end of the day, the buyer will critique with their dollars. So it pays to know the entire story. Some have left due to trolls, and some just no longer fit within this framework. But maybe you meant something else?

The particular forum I'm referencing does exactly what I mentioned. Many companies function on hype and stamp out criticism in their own little playground.

This!!! I was new to Survive! and wow some of those guys attack like sorority girls on spring break!

LISTEN UP!

We are not going to turn this thread into an all-purpose bash-the-knife-company thread. If you have a specific complaint or personal observation, lets hear it.

Saying "many companies function on hype" tells us nothing. That's just stirring up dissension.

Warnings await, infractions come running.
