• Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I hope that you all have something to be grateful for this year and for many years to come
  • America has reached 250 years, and I am grateful to be here, in the best country in the world. Thank every one of you who helps make this country a better place, those who have gone before and risked it all, and those who've paid the ultimate price to make the United States what we are today.

Happy Birthday America! Let Freedom Ring for all time!

No bite on my blades >:(

I have a laminated kitchen knife, but I think the core is vg-1. It will still get what most would call scary sharp off the 1k stone. That reminds me, I have 3 or 4 knives to sharpen tonight. Later.

OP: after sharpening through all your stones, do you have bite BEFORE stropping, You might be rounding the apex- with a strop you want to go slightly below what you do on a stone, only slightly, and you only want to make a few passes on the strop- less is more.

I have gotten into the sharpening side of knives pretty heavily lately. I have ordered some high end water stones and a good strop so that I can maintain a razors edge as needed on all my blades. I have honed(no pun intended) my skills to the point that I can get hair whittling edges with minimal difficulty. But my edges have almost NO bite. I can literally slide my fingers back and forth on the edge(with VERY lite pressure of course). My sharpening system is as follows. Set bevel to a burr on Shapton 1000 Grit Glass Stone, Strop on Shapton 6000 Grit Glass Stone. Strop on KnivesPlus Strop Block. So I'm thinking I might need to use a more aggressive stripping media for finishing. A diamond spray perhaps. Suggestions?

Another consideration - once you get the grind pattern down to a 6000 grit and stropped there might not be much left of the grind to catch on your fingers. I've had projects where I thought I'd rounded the edge off because the edge had no catch on my fingertips doing the three finger test. A day or two later I noticed a bunch of small parallel cuts in the outer layer of skin on my fingertips - not deep enough to bleed, but enough to cut through my fingerprint. Once the skin dried out they became visible.
