Its been a good weekend in the land of the Bulldog! I got my RD7 back from Ilbruche on Friday, the wife and the kids have been in a good mood, and the sun is out. So my son and I went for a hike at the intriguing No Bottom Pond. We took our packs and the Lone Ranger (pic below). Getting to the trailhead was tough, we drove up the side of the hill in 12" of snow in 4WD (its not a road!). After slogging through 12-16" of snow we reached the pond. The pond was once used as a hideout for Oscar Beckwith (the Cannibal of Columbia County), Beckwith was chased to the pond by a posse after he ate his mining partner (I always heard that miners were tough and chewy..), Beckwith hid in the ledges you can see in the pic. The pond completely empties on a regular basis into a cave system below it through an opening in the middle of the pond. To add to the mystique, there have been bigfoot sightings here as well. My son was happy that we had the RD7 with us in case we ran into either the cannibal or bigfoot, but no imaginary animals or geriatric murderers showed up! My son did find out why we pack extra socks though, walking through the deep snow filled his boots... A good time though!

That looks like a great place, and I like the back story too. I love places with a unique history like that!

I have the same Max pack...they work great! Glad to see you are giving the new knife some exercise! What is the other pack?

How many people did the cannibal eat? Nasty...

Stingray - Thanks

Tknife - Me too. Somebody gave a book last year titled "Trails with Tales" which has historical sites with hikes. My son and I have been trying to do a bunch of them.

RW - The RD7 is great, I really like it. Ilbruche suggested that I put a patina on it, so I am working on that right now (I'll post a pic when it is done).

I don't know how many people Beckwith ate. The book says that the posse tracked him from his cabin several miles away to the pond (there had been a light snow). They were sure that he was hiding in the limestone crevices and caves among the pictured ledges, but none of the posse had the nads to climb up and get him (they were also out of their jurisdiction) and so they left. Beckwith was caught later, but I don't how many folks he snarfed along the way....

Shiver. Dang that looks cold...

RW,

Sorry you asked about the other pack, its a small German rucksack copy, picked it up cheap from an Army/Navy store. It fits my son well, sometime soon I'll post complete pics of it.

Fiddleback,

Actually it was a balmy 36 F today. Friday was -2 F....

great pics... it does look mighty cold...:o i guess at least for this CA. boy..:D

Nice pics, M! The title confused me at first, as in "No pics of my hike to Bottom Pond." LOL.

Thanks guys. One of these days I want get pic of the place after it has drained out.
