No Busse in Knives Illustrated magazine?

So I’m at a bookstore checking out a couple magazine and decide to check out some knives, mainly as a break from looking at them online. I figured I’d read on the couch, in bed, on the bowl for a change of pace.

So there’s a special edition of Knives Illustrated, a buyers guide of “over 160 + premium knives and tools.”

They got every brand in here. Emerson, Tops, Fiddleback, Spyderco, even some Busse inspired knives, but no Wauseon Infi magic.

Seems odd to leave out what many consider the best American knife company.

I’m not buying this magazine not because I’m upset, I’m just confused. I won’t buy it because it doesn’t have my favorite blades in it, it seems incomplete.

Honestly, I'd be inclined to leave them off if I were a writer. It's hard to tell readers hoe great a knife is when they can't go order one from the company. Busse is getting better in having at least a couple of BG knives available. I was showing a friend years ago how cool my Randall was. Wherr can I get one he wants to know. eBay is your best bet. No, I wanna order from the company. Ok, send them $20, wait 5 years...

The Team Gemini is wildly popular yet hasn't had an INFI version available from the factory at any price since 2014 for production runs or 2015 when the CS closed. Some people just want a good knife and aren't looking to become a fanboy.

Sheesh Murman, that actually make sense to the point i cant believe i didnt think of it myself. All of the knives featured in the magazine can be ordered at will, whereas Busse have to be sought out :D

I'm lucky enough to be where I am and have known about Busse but also frustrated by the same thing- can't order anything and what I wanted at certain times weren't available, that's a classic example of not being acclimated to the brand and how it works, the only challenge is accepting it as it is what it is.

I've seen tons and tons of knives i thought were super awesome! research them and you come to the guys website -not currently taking orders - it's actually pretty common in this world of knives because of the 100's upon 100's of artisans and small batch makers. Busse is in kind of a strange area of the industry, small batch production kind of thing. He's found a sweet spot obviously that works for his business and spent decades developing a core group of fans just like anyone would over time. The challenge is to stick it out, maintain relevance and innovations and to the absolute challenge, maintain the revenue stream- It is a shame that Busse would not be included because you have to keep replenishing that fan base, I might be considered a decent example of that- but you still need exposure to pick up those who can acclimate and adjust to how the system works.

A lot of times those kind of reviews, annual maker and model layouts, for the general market people see something they like, they want to order it today - So the Busse system isn't built for everyone because not everyone wants to wait.

From what I've gathered looking at the background and history of knife makers, if you want to grow to be a major you have to make sacrifices, outsource, bring in suits and then the accountants get their fingers in the pie and it all goes to shit -
Could you imagine Jerry walking onto "Shark Tank" and when he told them his unit price and cost of production, They would all sht their pants.
It would be hilarious, Jerry would have em all on their asses laughing with an open mic comedy set. A good ole Ron White vibe comes to mind.

I gotta say, it's been interesting learning about all this Busseliciousness and it's quirks - There's no one else out there pulling it off like Jerry is in the same way that I'm aware of.

I trust the Bossman knows what he's doing - and I might add, now that there are a couple regular offerings on the website, he should be on that list, you can go order a few things 7 days a week, I call them gateway knives- they give you a little sniff and you're only a knife or two away from full blown addiction - Notice he starts with the SR101 and then he hooks you with the primo Infi and you don't even ask how much after that :D

I often wonder if companies have to pay in one way or another to be in the knife or gun mags. I don't think I have ever seen a bad write up of a knife or gun in any of those mags.

I worked for a company that did a lot of advertising and in my case - hell yea people pay. When a company is approached, at least the way I was, it's a sales job of what it will do for you to be in this bla bla bla whatever article, review thing. It's not always but just like every one of us, they don't work for free. Take Consumer reports for example- think about the implications of a bad review on your product- I'll bet you an apple the CFO of that companies first question will be "how much will it cost to get a better score?" ... not saying CR can be bought, but I have to believe it's discussed.
Magazines and reviews? oh hell yea. It's not everyone all the time but how do we know the difference?

That brings up a good point reality tv wise - not that Jerry would be into it, Im guessing he wouldnt, but his company would make for one heck of a reality show. It could be amazing if done right. Great cast of characters and a product far more compelling and interesting than duck calls :D

Dont want to be a smartass but I cant even remember seeing magazine for sale up here ,
You guys get magazine down south ? I think everything is internet now ,

We still have fairly large magazine racks in grocery stores down here,I prefer a hard copy of magazines and catalogs.

I am not sure but from personal experience here is what happened to me. I had a really good friend that was a writer for several of the most popular gun/knife magazines and he used to use my holsters and write about them in his articles.
After a couple of articles, his publisher asked him if I did advertising with the magazine and when my friend said no the publisher told him that either I buy advertising or nothing will be written about anything I make or accepted for print.

Just like anything else, gotta pay to get air time. For example the brands in all the " Top cigar" lists have payed to be featured there.

I don't want Busse to be just another knife company. I like it as is. If that makes me a fan boy so be it. Guilty as charged and don't care.

Consumer Reports has built huge brand value on being impartial and independent. They wont even let you advertise based on their results. So I don't believe that they can be bought. But they will talk to companies. I used to work for a paint company that sometimes would get poor reviews by CR. CR agreed to meet with our technical people, so that we could learn how they tested, what were their test methods, and how they rated and prioritized the various paint properties. It did help us understand CR.

And that is what I would expect from CR - Same thing happened with a company I worked for trying to get a UL rating on a product they made- load of procedures and money.

I found Busse while looking for a tough "To Hell and Back" knife.
All the while, INFI turned me into a fanboy.

.... this ! As much as I would like Busse to have a big wide range of knives available to buy at the click of a mouse there is a trade off for that, one that I am not (and most of us) are not willing to make. Busse sits somewhere between full custom and production, that is about as much as a happy compromise as you can get for what the end product is. And really, think back a couple of years ago about availability of Busse knives...WTH are people complaining about now...LOL Click and deliver will still get you quality tools like ESEE, Becker and several others. They are functional and will give a life time of service !

And yes, in the media you get what you pay for. When I was in the gun trade we would get calls from the wholesaler saying "you should stick up on x and y as we have paid up for some positive reviews" ....

there already gettin a little topsy with a few of the names like silent knight, flak jack etc. but atleast every knife busse comes out with doesn't come with a 8 paragraph long bs story on how it's used by special combat forces and tactical teams around the world etc.etc.
