Well, this weekend I had a little accident while working on sanding the flat on a knife. I was working on sanding the tang area on a knife that Scott Ickes gave me when my daughter opened the door to the shop and made me flinch. That is all it took. My left ring finger got caught on the belt and was pulled into the guard area of the belt sander. Luckily it ended up only being minor damage with the belt grinding through about half of my fingernail and taking a small chunk of the side of my finger, but other than that, I am ok.

Needless to say, after I got back from the Hospital, the family and I had a discussion about how, if they hear running equipment in the shop, to wait outside until it is done.

Be careful out there!

Glad to hear you are OK.

Years ago I was working in a metal shop where a co-worker was shearing sheet steel to size.

He stacked the finished pieces on an end table that wasn't steady so of course whan the stack got heavy enough the table started to topple. The worker instinctively grabbed at th table to prevent the fall and the edge caught on his wedding band literally peeling the skin halfway down his finger.

Ever since I ALWAYS remove rings, watch, EVEYTHING before working with any kind of power tool 'cause you just never know.

Again, glad to hear you are OK.

Dude,
I'm glad to hear you're going to be ok. Be glad that it wasn't a KMG or similar type knifegrinder, instead of the sanding machine. It would have been a whole lot worse.

Rings are extremely dangerous. I have a friend who had rented a Bobcat to do some earthmoving at a new house that he was building. The bucket was stuck in the air and he had climbed up on it to make repairs. When he jumped down, which was slightly farther down that he was tall, his wedding band caught on one of the bucket teeth. It took his finger off at the second knuckle. A man's weight is enough to take a finger off!

Guard came off last night. No more of that and luckily it didn't catch on the ring, or it could have been worse! Just the tip, so I will live, though it will take a couple of weeks to heal well enough to use it again. :(

Scary isn't it?

I had a close call one day when my wife came into the shop and startled me - lost the blade between the platen and the belt. Aged about 5 years on that one!!! So a new rule was implemented - whenever ANY machine was running, no one, whether my wife or one of the kids, was allowed to come in until they had turned the overhead light on and off, and the machine had stopped. THEN they were allowed to enter. I am kind of laid back, but get too intent and focused on what I am doing to have someone come up behind me when grinding or buffing.

Has worked well. Still have all my fingers.

It is scary. Not as scared as my daughter was when I rushed into the house holding my finger. I spoke to her and the rest of my family when I got back from the hospital and set some rules for when "daddy" is working in the shop.

heh, glad to hear I'm not the only fool to have done that.....

in all seriousness, careful mate, big tools just hurt more when you mess up

Something very simlar happpened to me as well. My rule is no one comes into the shop when a machine is running, unless its an emergency. Even when nothing is running I have them all trained to knock.

My accident can't be blamed on anyone but myself.I was switching pulleys on my homemade 2 by 48 grinder.I had just switched it off and it was coasting down, by the way it had a heavy 8 inch wheel and let my right pinky get grabbed by the belt, pulled my finger between the v pulley and the belt,in the blink of an eye ,it pulled all the flesh, fingernail, broke the tip, twisted the whole finger around:eek:... 2-3 yrs and two thouh later my finger still won't straighten and still has a lot of numbness---But I do have a guard on the pulley now-It can happen in an instant guys, and you can't have a do-over:D

i was sloppy a few times when i got my HF 1x30 and nicked my knuckles. luckily it would be difficult to hurt myself badly on it. i was glad to get a feel for grinding on it instead of starting off with a kmg. now i feel i will be allot better off when i get one, without letting my guard down. careful out there guys!

Tell me about it, same thing happened to a buddy of mine jumping out of a C-130 (on the ground, not parachuting). Caught on a rivet or screw in the doorway and plucked it clean off the same exact place. Messed up his ring too :D
