Some pretty harsh criticism here. Maybe that's good, maybe not.
Here's my take on this...
If you've got this shit in you, and it's got to come out, get it out. Perhaps you're not meant to make 'functional' knives. Perhaps you're meant to design art knives. Knives that fulfill some form of expression for you. Lots of art knives out there. Most of them with poor or no ergonomics, or incapable of actually cutting anything. The guys that made them, perhaps, started out just like you. Here's the good news - you're about six files, a stack of sandpaper, a hack saw, and some serious sweat away from actualizing something like this. The design is the first step, and like Mr. Rhea stated, likely the most skipped step. Anyone can slightly alter an existing design and 'make it their own'. Hell, that's about ALL I do, I'd say. I'd give my left ball to be able to display an ounce of the creativity you have in the two recent threads here in the custom section. Perhaps it's not enough for you to stop there, though. Maybe you need to figure out how to MAKE one.
Granted, your current housing situation seems like it might be offering a bit of an impediment, but given your obvious passion for the subject, I suspect that won't hold you back for too long.
If this is in your dream, hold on to your dream. Just realize that only you can bring it to fruition!
