I remember when a knife afficinado on here started making knives. He asked for feedback. Another member told him to get out some of the knives he had liked enough to pay other custom makers for, and compair the fit, finish, ergos, grinds, unge lines, etc.
I have paid for a few customs, that I was absolutely disgusted by the fit and finish on.
I had a hand forged custom, that I took one look at and literally had a good belly laugh about how bad the grinds were... harpoon with a grind that traveled from one flat, to the other. Absolutely inexcusable on a knife over $10-20. I spent hours with a diamond stone and trued it. With a grinder, it would have taken minutes to sort out.
I have two knives from that maker. I would not have let either see the light of day outside my own personal use!!! (Now, this maker is capable of putting out good work. These were some of his earliest knives....but even with a file, and sandpaper....he could have fixed most of the issues). I got both in a package from a member. Not the maker.
Do you have any custom knives to look at or fondle and compare?
You say you are not done with the knife, and that it has some thickness issues? Try fixing those issues. By hand if you have to.
Think about what price you think you want to sell for. Then haunt the custom for sale market here. Look at the knives, and what they bring.
There are makers on here that consistently put out what I would consider perfect. His prices are a bargain. Anyone who has held his knives talks about the amazingly even grinds. The finish, the fir, the whole package..... at great prices. Seriously. I have a knife of his I would put up against knives running 6 times as much, and I have held knives significantly more and thought wait...that grind is off...
He'll, I've picked up one of my own customs and thought hell.....I paid near $700bfor this...and that one grind is off!!
I've had that happen several times....
Remember, you are for the same dollars as the guy putting out an knife built as well as a $1000 knife who is charging $200-300 or so.
Look at your own work, and remove amy pride or ego and ask what you would pay for it compared to other work you see.
