no knife but lots of critter pics on this hike.

Awesome photos knife or no knife! Chipmunks are curious little creatures.

I found some of that first..."plant"...on a recent hike. I'm told may be a type of broom rape........

Like that "alter", that would end up being a frequent stop for me.

Bad news on the green thing though. It seems it is a wasp larva growth. Specifically a Oak Apple Gall Wasp.

that is spot on! thanks for the links. that's pretty awesome. i'll buy you a beer when you finally move here.

Dang ! beat me to it. Thats what I was going to say. Your lucky you got out of there alive.:D Did you see his eyes; of coarse he wasn't scared of you, he was sizing you up.:D

Seriously, very nice photos, enjoyed all of the spectacular, up close critters. Looked like a great time. What was that thing in the tree ? (cue the x files music)

ha! they were all over the place. no doubt they can gang up on me. squirrels get spooked easily but these guys are downright brave.

that x-files thing was a 1/2" per side pyramid which looked like it was made of reflective tape - similar to what you find stuck on bikes & helmets sort of thing. pried it off and there was a pin underneath holding it up.

Love these small creatures.
And above all, that mysterious green ball is a gall!
This is just amazing!

Thanks for sharing!

you're welcome! sad thing is there were 2-3 groups of hikers that blew by me before i took these pics. they were all too busy walking at a fast pace and chatting loudly. i doubt they even noticed half the awesome creatures i saw...hiking for them is like being on a treadmill but outside. oh well.

Cool, glad to be an inspiration

It's always good to practice skills and do new experiments... but it's nice to just take in the world around you too.

Very nice camera work. Thanks for taking the time to post all those shots. What is the story with that shelter? It's a real beauty.

I think the frog was more afraid of what was in the water then out of the water. Likely a snake nearby. Saw this one time before, didn't see the snake until I was right on top of it.

Great pics. Sounds like a great area to visit!

Im really grateful so many of you take the time to post such threads and pics. Theyre often from places i'll never get a chance to visit so your threads are greatly appreciated!

Love the chipmunk pics!

Sounds good to me. It is simply moving back home, though haven't really lived there in a year or so. I'm sure there is some good in this....just need to find it lol.

thanks, guys!

What is the story with that shelter?

there's about half a dozen or so of them spread all over the parks here in nj & ny - usually near a trail. they were probably constructed by the same volunteers who maintain the trails. a handful are dedicated to a person, most likely someone who donated a sizable amount after they passed away.

you'll be close to nyc again - world class restaurants, museums. harriman & bear mountain state parks are just awesome. and clubs...the amount of hot women in the area still boggles my mind :D pa is still close by whenever you feel like cow tipping :p

Squaw root on the first pic. The bears usually eat these guys coming out of hibernation.

Cow tipping seems like fun, though I am pretty sure women are more fun. Then again cows don't talk so the issue of arguments is nonexistent. Will be a nice break hopefully.

Is it edible for us?

Those are outstanding pictures. The beetles are American Carrion Beetles and it certainly looks like they're in the process of making more American Carrion Beetles!

Anybody else see the chipmunk with the glowing eyes and think of Vampire Gerbil?
