No Knife

Good point. I am sad to say I wouldnt have thought of that either:(

I got my mom to finally carry a dinky swiss army knife on her keychain and she claims he has used it thousands of times. While no cases were as serious as this one, that dinky little knife would have cut that seatbelt in 2 or 3 swipes.

Sure no one had a knife and I am all for carrying a knife for those unexpected events. But there was a pair of sissors that was eventually found in the car.

The fact is there could have been a knife in the kit (along with the sissors) but the mother did not even know what she had in the car. She wasted precious seconds not knowing the contents of her own car! Had she known, the problem would have been resolved a lot sooner.

It's one thing for us (knife carrying folk) to say Yeah, she should have been carrying a knife! Easy for us to say and do, but for the sheeple of the world, it's just not in their consiousness. My wife is an excellent example, she lives with a knife nut and is constantly reminded about the virtues of carrying a knife. Does she carry a knife? NO! If she would be willing to carry a knife, heck she could have any knife she wanted (I would make sure of that) but the best I can do is leave a SAK in the glove box of her car. She would use it, IF she remembers that it's there. I swear she would forget her head sometimes if it wasn't atttached to her.

For years I've told people who ask why I carry a knife that I do so partly in case of incidents like this. Of course, half of them don't even believe such a thing could happen with a seatbelt. Some say, "Seatbelts don't get stuck! If they do, just press the release!" They don't understand because they've never been in an emergency situation and think knives are only for stabbing, and anyone carrying a folder is doing so to ambush people.

There was another incident where a kid's jacket arm (I believe) got stuck in an escalator. He suffered damage to his arm but was finally freed when one of the onlookers pulled out his pocketknife and cut him free.

Telling sheeple about these incidents is like telling people about living dinosaurs in Africa...they belive it about as much, and maybe even less.

Great thread! Now I'll ask 2 questions, give my answers, but I want to hear everyone else's answers too!

1. What is a good knife for this type of work?
2. Where should you keep it?

answers:

1. I purchased Spyderco Rescues, but I'm wondering if I could break out a window with them. A full tang fixed blade would be better for this, but I REALLY like the sheepsfoot for emergencies, close quarters, and hands shaking due to adrenaline.

2. In my car, I have a latching center console, but it could be sprung in a collision. I was thinking of a cord or string, but that's not secure. I use Velcro in my truck to secure small items while off roading, but don't know if Velcro would hold in a collision either. I don't have a good answer for this. Yes, there are knives in my pockets, :D, but I'm not always in the car with my kids, my wife drives them around a lot.

What does everyone else do?

1. I have two answers for this.
a. the first is a gerber multitool obviously because it has tools for more than this situation but they have a serrated sheepsfoot blade that I believe would be excellent for this type of work.

b. it's not exactly a knife but benchmade has a rescue tool that is sort of circularand has no outside sharp edges. I'm not sure what i'ts called but I saw one yesterday at LKS.

2. glove compartment. it's just gonna have to be there. my car is too messy to keep anywhere else. I also keep a mini mag lite in there
