No love for the "R"?

So I'm new to the forum, but I've been browsing a little bit and haven't seen much, if anything, about the Nishijin R. I personally own one and am in complete love with it. Does it look/function too much like a different model? Does it just not feel right in everyone elses' hands? I'm a bit baffled...

I think it's a very attractive knife, but the lack of traction on the scales turned me off to the knife. Perhaps once in hand I would feel differently, but I don't want to put down $ to find out.

Yeah, the price kind of loomed on me for a bit.A friend actually picked this one up so I got some hands on time with it before I bought it off of him. By far one of my favorites!

R you serious?

i love my older model R2.

for some strange reason the R series never really caught on.

people are trendy, it's not a titanium framelock flipper with bearings and cts-xhp :)

I found the Type R unexpectedly attractive, and very strong, but the scales were too slick.

Back locks seem to turn a lot of people off.
I like back locks.
I like an original R. I like a lot the blade and scales. Unfortunately I never found one for the price I was willing to pay.
I used to have two R2. I carried one of them for about six month daily on weekdays. That was long time ago. I liked everything except the tip. It was replaced with something I liked more.
Current Nishijin R IMHO doesn't have even resemblance with R and the same tip like R2, which I do not like. I do not like Nishijin even more than a tip. It is too shiny for my taste.

I like the knife and the design, but like many people over her, I already have a Delica, Endura, and a Caly 3 (Older G-10 Version), so although this knife has cool handles, it doesn't offer that much new.

If I didn't already have the knives I mentioned above i would definitely consider it though

if it had some bearings and CTS-XHP maybe ;)

True, I guess I hadn't thought of that, it really does resemble the caly 3 in blade length and handle size. I tend to stick to knives with similar blade sizes/shapes so that I'm not getting used to a different feel each time I reach into my pocket for a blade. I rotate ithe R into my edc with my stretch and my SB endura, all three have a similar feel to me (although the endura is a little longer).

Well, I like it a LOT. Saw and handled the Nishijin, and it feels darn near as good as my Stretch. The issue is that it's over an oz more. (Anything over 4 0z, and for some reason, I start to notice it on the pocket edge.) So, what I did was to find an R2 in the Almite, and the weight is just right. The latice-work scales are not only neat looking, but add some grip to the mix. Unfortunately, I'm not finding myself a fan of the Spyder-Edge, which is what my example is.(I know, many aficionados say I should give it time, LOL.)

I don't know how many Spydies are in this same boat. IOW, it was only ever a sprint, now in it's third iteration. I think if they were to slap some FRN on this thing, it would take OFF. (It might replace my Stretch?) Then, they could sprint it out again, in G-10, LOL.

Personally I'd love to see a stretch run in g10 or CF again. I like my black frn just fine, I would love a little more diversity in the lineup.

As far as the R goes I think frn or g10 would be awesome on this knife. The Nishijin really makes it look like more of a gentleman's knife and not so much a daily edc.

the delica and endura knives both lack a choil.

for me that's one of the benefits of the R (and the cool handles).

let's face it, there's plenty of people spending hundreds on knife scales alone so that's not such a bad feature.

also, many spydies are similar in design and that doesn't usually deter people from purchasing more of them.

(just listed my R2 for sale in the exchange)

love the knife but time to move on.

I love the design, blade shape, and look of the scales. However, the lack of traction turned me off before I could buy one.

Thing keeping me from ordering is the thickness and weight. I'd likely order a Caly 3.5. I think this may be why it hasn't received much fanfare, as it's place in the Spyderco lineup is taken by many other options. It is nice looking, however, and I've thought about it a couple times.

I have always been a fan of the back lock. Have the original R, an R2 and now the R Nishijin. For me it was about completing the series for my collection. I would never carry these though because i see them as collectables.

But if another one gets released with plainer FRN or G10 scales I guess I could see my way to carrying that.

I tried really hard to love the R, but failed. It just never felt as "right" in my hand as the Stretch, the Schempp Persian, and the 93mm Rescue and Atlantic Salt. Plus, my thumb always felt too short to open it smoothly. Went so far as to have STR rebuild an R2 for me with a grip area contour like the ones I mentioned. Helped a bit, but the arc my thumb has to travel to open it still feels wrong.
