No more expensive knives at work

Today I had to go up to a attic of a apartment complex to look for a roof leak. The jungle gym of 2x4 where very hard to get around. Once I got everything rapped up I get home and reached in my pocket to put my spyderco para 2 on the table and found it was gone. In a panic I went back up to the attic and searched everywhere with no success. I think I learned two things from this 1. start clipping my knives to my back pocket 2. Stop carrying my nice knives to work.

Yeah, I've lost a few tools in attics putting pot lights in peoples houses...

Once it drops inside the insulation, in most cases its bye bye!

I would go out and buy another one and when I put it in my pocket I always clip it to the pocket at lease when I worked as a electricain I clip it to my front pocket.

I hear you bud...

That is the EXACT reason why I stopped pocketclip carrying my knives.

I will only carry in a belt sheath at work. No other way is acceptable to me.

I have almost lost my Umnumzaan and two Sebenzas to an attic, each time they got caught on something and bent the clip out and luckily I saw it happen each time and saw right where they landed in the knee deep insulation, took me about 10 minutes to dig and find them though.

I would strongly suggest you look into snap closure belt sheaths. There are a number of great leather makers on the forums, one in particular is Paul Long "sheathmaker" makes a real bomb proof sheath.

Good luck!

That is booboo!

This makes me worried about carrying my customs to work :culpability:

I have also used a gun retention lanyard when worried about loosing a nice knife. They are very unobtrusive!

I believe the Blackhawk one I bought was only 10 or 15 dollars.

I use it when canoeing, fishing etc.

I would look in the area of where you where navigating around the 2X4's and if you can remember where you bent your right leg the highest (that is if you had the knife in your front right pocket) and I would bet it dropped somewhere in that vicinity. Good luck!

Another vote for belt pouch carry. Not only will you not get snagged on anything else, the knife itself will also feel considerably better in the hand without the clip. Well, unless you like the feel of the clip on the handle, but I personally never did.

Good point. I actually only started carrying a couple of knives in their belt pouch-
traditional style knives. It's warmed me up to the idea of going that route
with my other knives.

Hope you find your Para 2, rgoonis.

I have done exactly the same thing in a cramped attic. Once the knife is out of your pocket and you didn't see exactly where it fell, it is almost impossible to find it with the blown in insulation used today. I have actually lost two knives this way and a couple utility knives. I don't take good knives into attics any more. Don't even perch you knife on a rafter or joinst.

Take a tool bag to move your knives and other tools around inside an attic. Use them and immediately put them back. Also have a good flash light with you and treat it the same as the knife. Use the bag.

Edited..I realized my opinion did not help matters..I agree with the others get a strong magnet and try to find it......I got by for years and years with inexpensive knives and razor blade style work knives..Since I can now afford a couple nice Spydercos they are held in a higher regaurd than a work knife..But thats just my opinion

Get one of those telescoping magnets with the LED built in. I am an electrician and this happens to me frequently while playing twister in attics. Blown in insulation sucks in every aspect except insulating. Since getting one of the magnets I'm talking about I have a 100% find rate on dropped tools in attics. Sometimes as I'm about to probe a potential area the light on the end shows me something shiny. Check the area you entered the attic and the area you stopped and worked the most thoroughly. These are the places I typically find my stuff. Seldom do I find them along the path I travelled unless there was a really tight spot I had to go through.
