Sales are going to drop.
That's just a fact.
People can't be in two places at once.

I'm not sure the split will hurt sales too much.

However, I believe the new rule that only registered users can view threads will have a negative effect on sales and new members.

Some people just don't like to register for web sites, whether they be internet news sources, or knife forums. If you don't believe me, look at the popularity of registration-avoidance plugins like BugMeNot.

If someone gets redirected here from the HI site, and finds out they have to register, they may leave without ever learning what a great forum/community this is.

In addition, non-registered users won't be able to view DoTD threads. I believe that several people here bought from DoTD threads before registering or participating (I know I was one of them).

So I think this could be a bad thing for HI.

Spark has done us a favor.

By making the Cantina a subforum, it is virtually no different from clicking on a new thread to move from one site to the other.

Of course, ominous was his intention to "trim" posts in the future and making THIS change to separate the wheat from the chafe...or, the specific knife threads from the OT, so he'd know where to trim.

His house. His rules.

Works for me.

Dan, that announcement is exactly what I'm concerned about. Registration is free, but some people don't like to give out personal information, or email, etc.

Let me put it this way, when someone posts a link to an online news article, and you have to register to read it, are you really going to register and give out your email to yet another entity? I normally either ignore the link and find another source, or use a service like www.bugmenot.com.

I don't think attempting to force people to register in such a manner will get new *participating* members, and may hurt DoTD sales for reasons I outlined above. How can a buyer tell if they want a DoTD if they can't even view the thread or pics? It's not even as if these pics are using up bladeforums bandwidth, since Yangdu hosts them on her site.

If you allow unregistered members to view the for sale areas, why not allow them to view manufacturers' forums where the manufacturers sell items? It doesn't make sense.

Does anyone really register anywhere with their real name and stuff??

I've got so many aliases, I have to look at my driver's license to remember who I am.

:D

After my first knee jerk response, I have to admit that this seems to be working out well and a lot of people seem satisfied with this decsion made by Sparks.

Snuffle, snuff -- joining the herd.....  :p

Even though it's considered french, I like Bree...

This makes me sad... I have hardly ever visited the cantina since the change over... This forum was so much like the Bark River forum with its diverse postings, and now it has become just like all the rest ... <sigh>

Bill would not like that. Oh, he is dead.

I've created a HI Cantina forum for you guys. I want all off topic threads going in there from now on.

By having so many off topic threads in this forum, you guys have made it so it's impossible to prune out the non-knife related stuff when I want to prune the deadwood. As such, when I prune we have to lose some of the HI forum information as well.

Please limit HI related topics to this forum, and the off topic stuff to the cantina from now on.

He probably read the US Naval Institute`s Procedings, A free and open forum. Army and AF guys publish there. COL. John R. Boyd, USAF could not find another forum. He gave us the OODA Loop. How he made 06 I`ll never know.

I was being an idiot Spark. I will try to play by the new rules.
I was just testing you.
I did not get the expected response. Are you getting smarter?

Forget it. With out Bill we have no chance of the anything goes days. We are going to have to live with Spark or the forum will die. It may well anyway.

I know there was a problem, and I know something needed to be done, but I cant help feeling that this will mark the end of the HI cantina as it was.
The vigor will be leeched off over time and eventually there really will be two forums, separate and distinct, and neither one as good a the original.

The idea of free speech and the electoral process is a painful, noisy combination. Life is noisy and painful.

The splitting up of the forum strikes me as something akin to being put in a nursing home. Sure, it's got all we need to survive and the kids can always come visit, but the vitality that comes from interaction with the real world is gone and wont come back.

I'm sorry this had to happen and I hope it can be reversed in the future with some other arrangements in place.

Warlock,

I felt very bad when Spark took this action to split the HI Forum into the Cantina and the Forum, but I feel that it is working out. I visit both areas.

The bottom line is that we are guests in Sparks home. As guests we have a duty to the Host, a duty to live by his rules or go somewhere else.

This is not a democracy, no more than my home is a democracy to visitors. They play by my rules or I throw them out.

There is a story about a monk and his student walking through the jungle. They came to a river and were about to cross when they noticed a young woman also trying to cross.

She was afraid of the water so the older monk offered to carry her across.

The monk and his student walked on in silence until they stopped for the night.

Finally the young monk said, "Master, I don't understand. Are we not supposed to keep ourselves from the touch of woman?"

The elder monk said, "What woman?"

"The woman at the river."

The elder monk replied, "I left her at the river. Are you still carrying her?"

Get my point?
