I've got a bad case of GEC "no production syndrome." I have the urge, and need, to purchase some of these knives, soon :-) 73's, 77's, 83's, 85's, and so many more.
Can anyone tell me what the cure is?

Keep watching the exchange here as well as the auction site. That's about all you can do.

Learn to enjoy what is available.

Part of what makes collecting fun is the hunt.

After all, it is just stuff.

👍👍 What Bob said. All 4 have been on the exchange recently.

I don't the percentage of new to used on the exchange. Condition and photos are supplied so an intelligent decision can be made.

If you are looking for new knives, go to GEC's web site, find the link to the list of their dealers, then check each dealer to see what is in stock. Otherwise, you just have to wait until GEC decides to make what you are looking for, and make sure to get into whatever waiting list, pre-order, or reservation system that your dealer(s) of choice use.

The days when you could leisurely browse through GEC's products at multiple dealers and pick and choose what you wanted ended a couple of years ago.

For first owner brand new, keep an eye on GEC's production schedule and What's Happening section of their website so you'll know what's in the works. Check the Collector Knives reservation page to get on the list for any model you know you'll want. For models recently produced, or even ones not recent, go down the list of GEC dealers on their website to see if any have old new stock. I know some places still have the 72 Cody Scout in stock, which is kind of like a 73 with a back lock. Not sure about the others you mentioned but there aren't that many GEC dealers so it's not a huge undertaking to check 'em all. Good luck!

Edited to add: Ha! Too slow. JC57 beat me to it. :D

Is anyone having trouble getting on GECs website I try to check it once or twice a week to seek what's coming up or in production but I haven't been able to get on it for about a week and a half

Honestly, I usually have more fun shopping on the exchange than I do buying from dealers, because of the "surprise" and "what will I find today?" elements. Lots of 74s out right now, which are pretty close to the 73s. 71s coming probably next month. 85s seem like a spring time knife, 15s in the summer, 77s in the fall. The 13 will come soon. Don't know what to think about an 83, but it seems like, outside of what I just named, based on what GEC usually does, you could reasonably expect another 4-6 folder patterns throughout the year.

Edit: Oh, and I forgot about that single blade 38...

I was getting errors a few weeks ago as if the website was completely down. It wasn't a 404 error and of course now I can't remember what the error message said exactly. I thought maybe they had switched over completely to the new .com url but then the .net one started working again. The errors lasted a week or so but it's been fine for me since.

That doesn't help, does it? Have you cleared your cache? Have you tried turning it off and on again? We have now exhausted the extent of my IT help desk knowledge. :p

They're all really great knives; good size and comfy in hand, imo.

The cure is this: Forget about GEC. Seriously. There's never enough to go around and all everyone does is get into a feeding frenzy over the few that actually do become available somewhere. Assuming you can get to this point, it's actually quite entertaining sitting back and watching the feeding frenzy!

Good luck!

Speaking of which, I know of 3 dealers right now that have 73s available, and one is a Cocobolo liner lock single blade. A quick Google search will reveal which dealers, Mr.Texaztea! Happy shopping.

I would like to add a bit to what's already been said. First it's a good idea to keep an eye on the exchange and really pay attention for a couple of reasons. even if you are not ready to buy you should pay attention of prices on the secondary market particularly if you plan on making purchases on the big auction site because you can get robbed very quickly. Also get a feel of how often a pattern you may be interested comes available and learn patience. With the secondary knife market you can get the shaft quickly with an impulse purchase if you don't know what your doing. As was said above check out GEC's site for the dealers list check them out often and not only be aware of what's available but price and whenever possible buy from BF registered Dealers. Just tonight I saw pricing on this newest run of caplifters on an auction site that were higher than the authorized dealers are advertising. One more thing before I shut up and I know you folks want me to. :D Check out the feedback for folks you are potentially going to do business with. Also familiarize yourself with The Good, The Bad and The Ugly forum It could save you some grief by giving the lowdown on some bad players. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/699-FEEDBACK-The-Good-The-Bad-The-Ugly!

There is definitely a learning curve when getting into GEC. It wasn't quite as bad when I started hunting about two years ago or so, but they have become quite popular and tend to sell out rather fast. It can(and will) be very frustrating, but if you put in the time to figure out their "process" and stay on top of the threads here you will quickly get the hang of it. They are pretty good about dropping hints about future releases a month or more in advance. You'll probably miss a few runs in the process, and that is frustrating. Just remember that it's a hobby, and don't take it to seriously.
Oh, and don't be afraid to send someone a visitor message if you have questions. Forum members have helped me locate knives more than once.

You might consider getting a 72. It shares some similarities with the 83 and 73 and might help with your "syndrome" for awhile.
