no rust ever

ok so after reading through pages and pages and archives and archives around here trying to soak up as much knowledge as i can, i have noticed one thing that still baffles me. i dont post much. im one of the quiet ones that just sits in the back and listens. but this i have to ask about. most posters mention rust on certain points of the blade, and different types of steel rusting easily or faster than others. different uses causing more rust issues, rust rust and more rust rusting rustiness. i have to tell you, believe me or not, i have NEVER oiled a blade of mine. i use dmt diafolds as my primary sharpening method now, and i use water on them. my knives are devided into two categories, ones i play with and ones i carry. the ones that i do carry, get used for everything. from opening a bag of carrots to opening mail to cutting cardboard, cutting rope, cutting food if i am in the field, opening a bag of popcorn (i turn the bag into a bowl) and everything in between that you can think of. regardless of which knife it is, from sitting in my drawer, to sitting in my pocket, to sitting in my storage unit for 1 1/2 years through harsh winters, i have YET to see rust on a blade of mine. and to top it off, these blades i clean with soap and water afterwards and dont lubricate. am i blessed? or have i just hit a giant string of luck?

Thanks for a great thread.:thumbup: I'm like you, I have yet to find a speck of rust on any of my knives. Also like you, I use DMT stones w/water to sharpen my knives. Now granted I don't live on the coast, or use my knives in salt water, but I do use my knives in the presence of landfill gas condensate, which is even worse :D I think you're right, we just must be blessed!;)

Its weird how some knives will rust and others will not. I live in Florida and have several knives including some non-stainless ones. Of course the stainless ones dont rust but some of the non-stainless ones do of course. Whats weird is that some of them which should be more rust resistance like a d2 knife i have seems to rust more than my high carbon steel machete and hunting knife. They are all treated similarly, mostly on drawer duty, and i oil them regularly at the same times. Maybe its a heat treat thing or something?

It's where live, I'm in Louisiana about 25 miles from the gulf and the humidity runs over 90'percent most of the time so rust is a problem. I've had knives rust while sitting on my desk at the office. Ur not blessed u just live in a very low humidity environment

The finish of the blade will help with water resistance. The higher the polish, the easier it will shed moisture while rough textured blades like bead blasted offers more surface area to rust.
