No survival kit.

Come on, Chris, admit it, that's a survival kit! Unless you also enjoy making fires and hurting yourself. :D

Doc

Doc,
It is a matter of perspective, by your rational you can add my coat and boots to the survival kit because I don't enjoy hyopthermia either.

I don't mind if we call it a survival kit even though I don't have one bag, box or "kit" that I take with me and call a "survival kit". There are needles and thread in my wallet, braid of 550 cord in my pocket, leatherman wave on my belt, bic in my pocket, safety pins pinned to the top of the small pack I carry every day along with a small FAK, so I guess I am a walking survival kit.

As far as the snare wire, carried it for years and never used it, there is only so much redundency needed. Of course it can be used for other things but I already have dental floss, 550 and fishing line the snare wire IMO is unneeded excess so it went away. Chris

...If you always carry certain items with you, that you don't use a lot of the time, but like to have just in case, that's a PSK. It doesn't have to come housed in a nice little Pelican box or whatever and it doesn't have to weigh 10 pounds or more - and it can just be 2 or 3 items. It can be split up amongst different pockets, but it is still your version of a Personal Survival Kit. How many of you carry a Bic, but you don't use it every trip, or bandaids, or a spare compass? I rest my case. :)

That makes perfect sense... but I do think the OP was talking about your stereotypical everything in a box type PSK.

Doc,

Not quite - you're using your coat and boots by virtue of wearing them. The FAK and the fire kit are 'just in case' items, similar to a PSK. And the point you made about the fishing kit was you carried it because you enjoyed fishing so I was thinking that was also why you carried the FAK and the fire kit. Just bustin' your chops, Chris. :D

I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm was just nit picking as to what constitutes a PSK. And like you, everyday I have 4 or 5 5-foot hanks of 550, a mag bar, a whistle, a Fenix L2D, a Vic Spirit, Spyderco Manix, Buck Alpha Dorado and a mini Bic - in other words, the 'August West' walking survival kit. :D

As Rick correctly pointed out, the OP was probably referring to a special little container full of gear, so I guess, in that sense, I was hijacking the thread - my apologies, OP.

Doc

^ I don't think you were, that was part of my point as well- that a PersonalSurvivalKit isn't much of a help if it isn't on your person

hence my change up recently on what I daily carry

the nomenclature isn't so vitally important- I sometimes get lost w/ all the acronyms :) the preparedness is

If you do any kind of looking on the interwebs you see a bunch of guys who carry a survival kit that they "only touch in an emergency." I personally find that to be a bad idea. Sometimes you don't know when you're in the beginnings of a survival situation so you may not use a piece of gear that could keep you from continuing on that path. I have gear in my pack that I only carry for certain situations that I don't plan on encountering but I view everything I carry as useable. If I need it I use it, even if I'm on a casual day hike. What do you think? Do you have gear that is segregated from normal use?

Yeah, it is all kit to me. I use what I need when I need it.

Best,
Marion

No probs, I get it now, I didn't realize how my original post sounded, it did sound like I am a fishing, pyromaniac masochist. :D

Sometimes I do think we lose sight of reality, some of the kits I see around the net are insane. They are packed for nuclear war, the second coming of Christ or zombies taking over of the world, which ever comes first. :p

My kit, so to speak, is geared more towards my outdoors hobbies, not survival, even though most of my stuff is useful for that too. Chris

G'day DOC

For what it's worth (which is exactly what you paid for it), IMO there is no need to appologise. Stimulating debate is always a very good thing. It makes us all think and not just accept the "norm"

But then again, what would I know :D

Take care Doc.

Kind regards
Mick

I carry a PSK in Doc's sense.
That contains a small first-aid kit and a headlamp.

Depending on activities, other tool like a pair of plier, wire and adhesive tape are added.
