My understanding is Debian is generally Gnome-centric. You can run KDE too, but possibly not as well. I don't know from my own experience though.
Many folks prefer KDE because it's more "like" windose. I've used KDE more than Gnome but kinda liked Gnome anyway. Some people say it's more "like" OS X, but I don't see that at all.
Anything to break from the windose tradition sounds like a good idea to me!
Give Gnome a shot and see if you like it. You can always switch over to KDE to try that later too.

you're right, so I'll give a quick nod to NODWarrior, Gnome is the default desktop, but all you need to do is open up Synaptic package Manager, and look for a package that is labeled KDE or KDE Metapacakge. that will install KDE as well, then you can choose one or the other when you log in. I prefer KDE as it is more powerful, and more customizeable. My wife prefers Gnome, as it is in her words "Newbie proof"
