Recommendation? non ferrous pocket knife

I thought SM100 was just 52100 modified?

No its a titanium alloy used by Dwayne Dwyer and others in non magnetic knives.

I recommend the OP checks out Mission knives. They have many knives which are 100% non magnetic with titanium blades. Their all Ti folder is hard to find these days but they have a large selection of non magnetic ti fixed.

As I understand it you don't want to expose yourself to cobalt dust from sharpening.
You might grow another arm . . . or some thing.
No . . . it will make you go cross eyed and attack lions with just your teeth . . . like Honey Badger . . . that was it. Ya stay away from cobalt.
I can't imagine that could be a problem unless you're grinding it on a wheel.

In some cultures bamboo was utiized as blade material.
It has been said to have been sharp enough
for circumcision in south east asia :)

Boye's knives were tested by Practical Sailor Magazine years ago and found to be non-magnetic.

I didn't realize satellite isn't magnetic. Elemental cobalt is ferromagnetic just like iron and nickel.

Decent titanium alloy blades aren’t cheap - I don’t think that’s what the OP was looking for.

Check out ceramic blades, like a few people have mentioned. They can be had relatively cheap. They’re prone to breakage so you do need to be careful. Maybe you can get your employer to pay for them?

Yes you seem to be correct.
This article >>>>Link seems to confirm that cobalt can be toxic but that beer is the antidote. I didn't understand the entire article but we seem to all be well inoculated against the devastating effects of cobalt poisoning or as I call it "The Honey Badger Syndrome".

All joking aside here is what I was going on :

  • Similarly, a dermatitis in hard metal workers appears to be due largely to the effects of cobalt. It has, however, been noted that tungsten carbide appears to modify the toxicity of cobalt and that cobalt alone does not have the same potent toxic effects.[6]
Sharpening tungsten carbide metal cutting tool bits can be hazardous though gnashing up a bunch of cobalt rich vitamin B-12 tablets should be innocuous enough.

Oldschool Benchmade 970 Titanium (CQC-7).

Not cheap, and a collector's piece these days, but it'd do the job if the hardware is Ti as well?

was just wondering if any manufacturers make one. i work in a magnetized area and having one could be pretty helpful with my job. we are issued box cutters but they are ferrous and not allowed in the work area, which means everything needs to taken care of outside the work area which gets annoying. any help on this. i dont need a crazy ass tactical folder or anything. just a nice 2 inch blade maybe? its just for cutting plastic pieces, hoses, cardboard. a sharp workhorse.

Mission Knives MPU Ti could be a great option for you.

Doing a ceramic folder would be tough, and then requiring titanium hardware for non-magnetic...pivot would need be sleeved and fixed sleeve in blade or the ceramic would grind it to pieces, likewise a plain pivot. And then also would be rotational wear which the ceramic would eat alive any bare handle.slab or thrust washer bearing...

All in all, a $5-$10 plastic/ceramic knife/sheath combo such as the paring knives seems THE option to have...do NOT trust blind cast plastic handles to not have a ferrous crosspin or something. Check thoroughly and test in room while NOT carrying or holding.

I work around both a 3T and a 1.5T MRI scanner daily so I understand your need for something non magnetic. The only thing I have ever found that didn't want to jump right through my pocket was one of those polymer CIA type daggers. In my case even the hardware caused potential problems.

Hayne’s Stellite is about 50% Chrome and 50% Cobalt, comes in several grades, and is not Ferromagnetic. I have knives in 6-K, 6-B, and 6-BH (Talonite). They all are excellent IMHO.

I believe the Tom Mayo TNT is a non ferrous folder. It's a classic and beautiful. However it aint remotely cheap though.
