Are there any pocket knives out there that are totally non-ferrous? For example, titanium frame and a ceramic blade?

Planning on taking over an airplane? If you could explain why you need a knife that is non-ferrous then we may be able to help ya better.

There are some kitchen knives with plastic handles and ceramic blades.

Boker has some titanium folders with ceramic blades. But I don't know about totally ferrous-free. Pins, liners, springs, etc.

They'd still show up in X-rays.

Yeah, ok, the general idea is to get through a medal detector. I don't think any of us like to leave our knives at home just because we have to pass through one. Not that I would suggest doing anything illegal of course. Just an interesting point of trivia.

Hmm, although I don't think it's good to try to bypass such security arrangements you can examine this document as to understand what people operating such places should be (and they may be :)) aware of (it's uploaded @ rapidshare - you have to download it first)

I do. I can do without the utility that a knife provides in the relatively rare circumstances when I'm in a place screened by metal detectors or where knives are otherwise prohibited. If you're planning on "sneaking" in a knife for defensive purposes and actually end up using it in that capacity, you'll subsequently find yourself in an unpleasant legal situation which will likely conclude with a stay behind bars.

I remember that more than one person taking the blade out of a sebbie and carrying the handle on carry on and ckecking the blade. This is a much better idea IMHO than trying to sneak a knife on a plane.

No offense but it sounds kind of suspicious...
If you want a self defense weapon you can try other things that security probably wont take a way. A flashlight for example.

I cant get on a plane because a terrorist has the same name as me. According to the news the system can't tell the difference in a 13 year old kid and a 40 year old terrorist.

I don't know but the report on some show like inside edition had the same scenario with a 14 year old girl.

Surely there is a way to clear up the mess. Go to the right people and whatnot. I have heard that they wont tell you why you cant fly though. That sucks. It would be even worse here because in hawaii you certainly cant drive to the mainland.
On a side note though, it wouldnt be the best method to go up to the airline clerks and tell them your not a terrorist.

Non-ferrous metals show up on metal detectors as well.

Really? I thought they operated on some sort of magnetic field, which would not effect non-ferrous metals. Can you provide more info?

You guys are right that it isn't a very practical idea. It's just something I got to wondering about. The Microtech Assailant got me started.

Any conductive material (meaning, any metal) will make it beep. Yes, it is a magnet field. But your assumption, that you can induce a magnet field only in ferrous material is wrong. A changing electric field will induce a changing magnetic field in any conductor. It is true though, that you can augment the field with a ferrous core, but that is not needed. You can make a very strong electric magnet using only copper wire for example.
Under X-ray only density is important. Even a ceramic blade will show up under X-ray.
