Non-ferrous

I dont know about pocket knives, but cold steel has a variety of zytel/grivory shivs, erm.... self defence tools ;)

You could always knapp a crude razor-thingy out of glass if you're in need of a sharp edge.

The idea isn't so much for a weapon as a tool. The other day I was wearing my suit for an interview, so I left the knives at home. I stopped at a gas station for a fill-up and a snack and found myself struggling to open a plastic bag of peanuts. It renewed my appreciation for how handy a sharp edge is. Although I have never had occasion to use a knife for self-defense, and probably never will, the insurance of having one does lurk in the back of my mind.

I don't think too much more info on knives and metal detectors should be provided to this poster. If he has this compulsion to take knife on a plane, I'd be rather cautous.
I don't buy that, "I don't think any of us like to leave our knives at home just because we have to pass through a metal detector".
HINT...use your teeth to open the bag of peanuts...

The question was really just a theoretical one, mind your own business if you don't have something to contribute. And here is a HINT for you, the next time you start to reach for your knife to cut something.....USE YOUR TEETH! :jerkit:

I wonder if I can get some S30V caps...

Yeah, ok, the general idea is to get through a medal detector. I don't think any of us like to leave our knives at home just because we have to pass through one. Not that I would suggest doing anything illegal of course. Just an interesting point of trivia.

Why ... because it is the LAW....!!!
It is just such "trivia" that is not considered funny in this day and age.
Next time, act with some common sense when posting such things.

My post was more than appropriate, it was needed. In this day ... you can never be too cautious with individuals seeking such information.
It was definitely a positive contribution ... to be VIGILANT when it comes to posts like these.
Have a nice day....

Any conductive material (meaning, any metal) will make it beep.

I once set off a metal detector at the US Federal Court House with a pack of Juicy Fruit!

That detector was set to find anything! Sensitivity settings of the detectors play a large part. I've got seven screws in my ankle that didn't cause a wand to go off. I'm not sure why it didn't but that's a lot of steel in a relatively small area. I don't know if the wand was at a low setting to avoid activation by surgical implants, but it's a possibility.

O.K. Mr. VIGILANT (do you have a spandex shirt with a big "V" on the front?), don't get your panties in a bunch. I'll try not to offend your delicate sensibilities in the future.
Ya know, "in this day", a knife on a plane isn't much of a threat, since there is probably an Air Marshal with a gun somewhere on that plane as well. 9/11 couldn't happen again, the passengers wouldn't let it. Take your terrorist hunt somewhere else, my biggest brush with the law is a speeding ticket.

Jeez, now I have to add someone else to my ignore list...

You're asking a group of people to "hypothetically" help you break laws which directly affect their hobbies and interests.

What did you expect?

Only way you could please a knife community to have a non ferrous knife that won't be picked up by EMF's is if you work around an MRI machine and metal is unusable.

I've seen knives in the blue ridge knives catalog that were advertised as being constructed completely out of ti, but i can't remember the company name. (BTW, these knives did cost around $600, so they were waaay outta price range, and the limit i will pay for a knife.)

its pretty much the case that many of these things are about. so much so that if anyone planning foul deeds were unable to find a non-metalic knife, they would probably wouldnt be able to find the courthouse/airport/venue for foul deeds either.

that said, it could be kindof helping someone do an illegal act, or at least being complicit in someone doing something ill advised that could cause them trouble. so you could see why people wouldnt want to discuss that type of knife in such a context.

at best, promoting inferior knives

at worst, guilt and civil or criminal liability?

lets stick to the iron hey

Good enough Sword. No criminal intent was ever present, just a point of curiosity. However, it is not my wish to get the forums in any kind of trouble, nor to piss off the members. Consider the subject dropped.

Mission knives and tools makes knives that are all titanium, titanium is a non ferrous metal (no iron). There the only knives I carry, I don't plan on taking over any airplanes, its no one on here or anywhere else for that matters business why I choose to carry Mission knives and my name isn't mohammed. Not that any explination is needed but to appease the knife nazis on this site, I carry them because I live, work, and play in South Louisiana, I like to hunt and fish and I got tired of buying quality high end steel (ferrous) knives and having them rust from just hunting and fishing or just being exposed to the humidity we have, regardless of continual care the edges will rust even if not used. So I buy, carry and use titanium knives exclusively, it just so happens Mission does it better than any other I've found. After carrying them for a while I'll never go back to steel its inferior, steel rust period. Bring on any test any whatever, leave any high end folder or fixed blade over the weekend on a speck boat (speckle trout) a salt water fish and guest what its going to rust. Coatings wear off and those knives too will begin to rust. Also non ferrous knives will not set off a walk through metal detector, only the wand will detect them. I'm in and out of Court Houses all over the state for my work and have forgotten my knife in my pocket on more than one occoasion and it never I repeat never sets off the walk through metal detector and since they never wand me I walked right through. I know by the post above this makes some of you very uneasy, nervous, mad, or whatever mayber I should be asking what business do you have carrying a piece of sharpened steel are you planning on using it as weapon, Hmmnnn?

Jarod, H1 will rust maybe not eventually but at some point it will rust its steel which means it has iron in it thus making it a ferrrous metal. It may take longer for the oxidation process to start but the eventually its going to rust. Only non ferrous metals will not rust, i.e. brass, bronze, copper, titanium, etc. I'll put any Mission product up againest anything spyderco will has, is are will EVER put its name on, period.
