Went camping for a couple nights this weekend so of course some edged tool tagged along. Took a Bear Mt Minute Man hawk, my Nessmuk pattern fixed blade, a RAT model 1 folder, and a Fiskars hand saw. I also had a SAK in my survival kit but it didn't get used. All worked well but at the high elevation we were at, the dry fir was pretty resistant to being chopped. Didn't waste too much time on overexerting myself so out came the saw. The RAT 1 did great service spreading peanut butter and cleaning our rainbow trout. The Minute Man hawk wasa nice handle for moving a couple pitch covered blocks of wood. Most of our campfire wood was washed up limb wood so I used the Fiskars saw the most on breaking that down to more useable sizes. We used Vaseline soaked cotton balls for our 1st campfire. On the second night my son had spotted some goat's beard and we used the natural tinder to start our fire. Both went with only 1 strike on the ferro rod. All in all it was just a lazy camp trip but the Fiskars saw REALLY impressed me! It weighs almost nothing and cuts like a laser :)

Sounds like it was a nice trip. There's no need to go crazy, seeing how much you can cut, carve, or chop on a given trip. I think some of us forget that sometimes, me included.

Nice knife! I like that a lot!

Nice pictures. Its great to escape the rat race and get in some outdoor activities.

Bill --

I have been keeping track of my uses for this years camping season and they mirror yours exactly.

Saw for cutting firewood, I have a folder by Felco.
Boys axe for splitting and fire duties, I use a Norlund family hierloom.
Benchmade 710 or a Frosts Clipper for everything else, mostly food prep and light cutting tasks like whittling a hook to hold a billy can.

I have other tools but they never made it out of the bag, they were not needed in over 3 weeks of camping this season.

The only other item not listed which saw a lot of use is my old surplus folding shovel. It is a German model with a spike on one side, makes an excellent fire/dutch oven tool!

Bill, I've looked and looked at that Fiskars saw and just never picked one up. I suppose because of how the blade is dispensed instead of folding open. No problems with the locking mechanism?

That Nessmuck blade of yours is very nice.

Never had any issues with the lock at all. I recently discovered there is a 10inch blade vesion of this saw and I am gonna have to snag one :)
