Non-knife related injury

I'm not clicking on your picture because I think I know what it looks like already. Your story reminds me of the time I was going to buff a 2 foot long piece of twisted nickel silver wire on my 3600 rpm loose buffing wheel. I just touched it to the buff and it ripped it out of my hands so fast I couldnt do anything except scream and jump. It was whipping around and making a loud whirrling sound but thankfully I didnt get cut up.
Heal fast my wounded friend.

Every time I read this, I picture a grown man screaming like a little girl and running. Makes me laugh, so thanks. :D

Wow dang man that sucks! At least you did not lose an eye. Even with eye protection a wizzing string could do some serious damage! I have had cuts and puncture wounds from just playing guitar and having strings break.

How bad is the damage to the guitar? Are you going to try and repair it or finish it out as is?

Oh and scars just add charecter.

Yeah, I'm VERY thankful that it missed my eye.

There's a weal about 6 inches long on the top of the guitar, and then some gouges on one side and a couple small ones on the back. It's fixable, but I don't have the heart to do it now, I'll wait until I change strings.

go mike, thanks for the suggestions. Right now I'm using aloe vera gel on it, and it's making good progress. I'll give the coconut oil a try when I'm done using bandaids on it.

Sorry to hear of the injury, glad it wasn't worse. On an off note how are those grizzly kits? They have always made me curious. They seem to be a great deal if the wood is the quality that they show in the pictures.

Well, the back of the box has some waves in it that couldn't be sanded out, but there are no gaps or cracks anywhere, so overall I'd say the kit was worth $80. It's now strung up, and sounds a whole lot better than the $25 made in china POS that I bought on ebay. ;)

It was good enough that I'll probably buy another one. I'm actually considering making guitars as well as knives, and want get a feel for it with kits to see if it's something I want to pursue.

Boy you're right, that IS an ugly nose, I mean cut:D:D
Heal fast:thumbup:,
Matt

It wasn't born ugly, that happened when I was seven and caught a softball with it...

Well Phillip, chicks dig scars:)

Really? Cool! They should love my left arm then. I count seven scars there. :)

Thanks to everyone for your commiserations. I hope we all learned something from this besides the fact that I'm a dork. :D

Thats what we call a weed eater :D

Thank you for sharing you mistake with us. It makes me THINK a bit more when I use tools.

I scar on the nose will just make you look roguish, but a lot of scars will make you look foolish.

Careful, it can be addicting (like something else we know...). But what the heck, you probably already have most of the tools.

I'm mostly a solid-body guy but either way there are tons of resources for kits and parts and whatnot. It's definitely satisfying to put one together exactly the way you want it. (Again, much like knives.)

Making money off them is a different story (again... :o)

Thanks for sharing, and I wish you a speedy recovery!

You might be stuck with knifemaking now (and/or guitars) as this accident might impact your modeling career....

hey phillip
I know some awful stories about guitars being tossed all across the room by angry buffers, and what I learned is that you should never buff a guitar with any strings in it. not even with the hardware. I hope you heal fast and keep building those guitars!
Im a guitar builder myself and im happy to see other guys building guitars in a knife forum!

Start a thread, maybe in Gadgets&Gear, and post pics!

It's not surprising to me... I find a lot of similarities between custom guitars and custom knives. Fun with exotic materials, plenty of options and designs to play with, lots of tweaking to get it "just right," that sort of thing. :)

That is far too close to your eye.

I hope nothing like this ever happens again.

I am an old lab physicist. I learned my lessons early and fast ... most of the equipment I was working with would have killed me had I made a mistake.:o

Thanks for sharing.

Philip,
That was a close call. Glad your OK.

Is there a tutorial on using a buffer for knifemaking? If someone has the link that would be a nice refresher.

Larry

Sure glad that you were not seriously hurt!
Be sure to keep ALL your wounds clean & use Neosporin or equivalent.
When something like this happens, you realize how important Eye Protection is...
(Would love to see your guitar);)

Will do james, but I have to get a good digital camera first. As soon as I get one I will start that thread. and yeah, there are lots os similarities in building custom guitars and custom knives.
I always end up with lots of scrap wood (mainly mahogany) big enough for knife handles but too small for anything else in the guitar part. if I were in the US I would gladly give all that to you knifemakers. too bad our jobs don't share the same power tools cause if I had the ways to do it, I would be trying to make some knives myself. well, maybe someday!
