non-paying members with avatars ?

Couldn't help but notice that some of my fellow freeloaders have avatars. Some even have GIFs.

Is this a loophole for certain smart phone apps? Just wondering.
 
One of two reasons. Back in the day everyone could have avatars, at some point it was changed to paying members only. The people you see with them were grandfathered in.

If they are a new member its because they are paid but have not updated their user group.
 
The change to avatars only for paying members came before I signed up back in 2006. The registered users with avatars I noted had join dates of 2002 or earlier. Sometimes it is just a paying member who hasn't updated their user group.
