Non-Threatening Knives? or What Designs Can Anyone Love?

Good Day,

What knives do you think can be appreciated by everyone?

Let's not argue the exception, in that vein, let us not say that daggers can be loved by everyone.

But, as Custom Knifemakers who meet 'normal non knife people' at shows, as Collectors who have 'normal non knife people' as friends and relatives, as Dealers who sell, only sometimes maybe, to 'normal non knife people'....

What designs and traits make for a Non-Threatening Knife?

What knives will my mother-in-law fall for?

Speaking as someone whose had alot of friends who weren't "into" knives but didn't have anything particular against them. Small is #1, something with a 3 inch or less blade seems to better recieved than a 4 inch+ blade. Stubby designs with drop points also garner less "omg is that a weapon" than a clip point or spearpoint knife with a slimmer design. Colorful knives (like safety yellow/orange or pastel handles) also say cute more than stab stab.

Slippies and lock backs seem to be more sheeple friendly than frame and liner locks.
A 4" or less OAL closed slippie stockman is my church and business knife of choice.

Mix with bright handle colors and your set.

The multi-blade scout/utility/SAK patterns seem to be pretty non-threatening.
People seem to see those as a useful tool, not a weapon. They have the "boy scout" image.

I'd say traditional 3 blade Whittler/Stockman design. Most people still consider those just plain old pocket knives and aren't intimidated if you pull one out.

On the otherhand anything with serrations gets looks of fear and fast assisted openers seem to have people running for cover or saying something about "Swithblades" being illegal.

LOL I have a Kershaw Blackout partially serrated I use as an EDC and I've had people (people I KNOW) actually take a step or 2 back from me when I took it out the first time around them.

Multi-tools dont seem to bother anyone and some have blades that are quite large.

This is really easy, mostly because it is what I make, the answer is Kitchen Knives! You can have fun with them, they are useful, everyone needs them and your Mother would appreciate one as a gift.

I would say kitchen knife also.
Go to your local coffee shop and take out a roll of tactical knives...people will call the cops. Sit there with your coffee with a roll of chef/kitchen knives in front of you folks wont look twice.

I think that as long as we continue with zero tolerance for knives in schools and our population grows up associating getting caught with a knife with catastrophic results, you won't be able to pass off any knife as non threatening. As for kitchen knives, just add a hockey mask. ;)

From my personal experiences, the ONLY ones that won't freak people out are kitchen knives and small, traditional slip joints.

The funny/ironic thing there, is I guarantee there's a hell of a lot more knife related crimes committed with 6-10" bladed kitchen knives than any bowie/fighter/camp knife.

I get what you are saying but, it would be really weird to see someone pull out a roll of kitchen knives in a café!

I think, to answer the question, warnclifs with a colored handle 3 inches or under.
