Recommendation? Non threatning looking pocket knives? Help appreciated

A slipjoint is always going to be perceived as less threatening.

First place to start is to find out if the OP wants locking, one hand opening, and maybe super steels. If any of those are important, then possibly a less threatening modern can be suggested (as many have).

If those are less important and he just wants a nice knife with non-threatening being top priority, then a slipjoint with an easy open notch or an easily grabbable blade is the answer. A weaker backspring would be in the mix as well. Just an example of an easy open notch.

By the way. Swiss army do knives that you can sort of pinch open. Rather than need the nail nick.

The picnicker which is my go to attend a party knife for example does that.

Depending on what you like, I’d recommend a Benchmade mini-griptilian, a Buck 501 or 503, s junior sodbuster that you can pinch open, a spyderco delica, and the Buck 55. I didn’t read through the whole thread and maybe these have been mentioned before. I know the delica was. You might look at the Buck 505 and the 3 inch case lockback. Given that you like the look of sheepfoot blades, might want to check out a half Congress style. I suggest going somewhere you can handle them in a store and see if you can open it easy.

Before my grandpaw passed away in his last couple years his arthritis got so bad he couldn’t open the stockmans And congresses he always liked so I got him a small Case lockback. About 3 inches closed, red bone handles. He carried it a while then gave it back to me, it was obvious he never warmed up to it. I told him I’d give him my yellow case sodbuster junior cause it can be pinched open. After a divorce and two moves I couldn’t find it though and I only found it the day before we buried him. So it’s in his pocket forever now. That was a rough day (year).

Didn’t mean to derail your thread with that paragraph but your situation really hit home with me. If you’re anywhere around East Tennessee contact me on here and I’ll happily bring all my knives and you can look through them and see what works for you and what don’t.

Thank you so much everyone I'm humbled by the response. I'll give it another day in case there is any further suggestions and then will answer in detail.
Something else that should be considered - Seeing as you may have problems opening most small pocket knives, you might want to look at some auto-openers. Autos are actually legal in many states now, and in places where they aren't there may be exceptions for a person who can't reasonably open a knife otherwise. There are nice some small ones available, 2" or so needed.

“I would have went for a Swiss army knife however due to arthritis and some hand issues I just can't manage the nail nick opening mechanism.”

The Victorinox One Hand Trekker is a highly regarded model with a locking primary blade featuring a prominent thumb hole. Definitely worth a look!

Some things to consider. Easy to pinch open and non-threatening:

Top ones are friction folders, bottom ones are slipjoints

Have you considered a small fixed blade for pocket carry?

Folding knife, considering your arthritis:

Spyderco Pm3
Spyderco delica
Benchmade mini bugout
Benchmade mini 940

The ones I use the most around customers in the showroom are the WE Blue Banter, Kizer Blue Mini-Sheepdog, and Spyderco Cat. The Civivi Baby Banter, Benchmade Mini-Griptilion, Spyderco Para 3, or Ontario RAT2 would also be good choices.

Good morning,

I'm hoping you guys can give me some advice and recommendations.

I would like to purchase my first pocket knife. I was hoping to get some recommendations of models which don't have an aggressive style. The reason for this is that my wife isn't really fussed on knives in general and I like to get something which she will feel comfortable around and I can eventually convert her to this fantastic hobby and community.

I would have went for a Swiss army knife however due to arthritis and some hand issues I just can't manage the nail nick opening mechanism.

I've been doing some research and quite like the looks of a sheepfoot blade design as I don't think it looks too pointy. I have looked at the likes of the spyderco roadie however I know it will be too difficult for me to open because of the lack of a thumb hole.

I have a decent budget of $200 and would be happy to spend that if needed to get a suitable knife for my needs, however I'd be equally happy spending less 😂👍

The only other knife I looked at was the crkt pilar which I really like however I would feel a lot more confident in buying this or another model after some help from you knowledgeable members.

I hope I've given you enough information, however feel free to contact me if you need anything more.

I'm really hoping you can help me out and I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you TG
