Non-Toxic Handle Material

Thanks for the clarification guys! All of the other threads made it sound like if you inhale one speck of G10 dust it will slice your lungs to pieces. I can always convince my mom to let the dog in when I work so I might try those in the future.

Don't forget eye protection. I've had things bounce off my safety glasses at work a couple of times (caused my error), so I'm glad I had them on.

I'm glad that you are concerned and thinking about potential safety issues.

Have fun making those knives!

Whaaaat? I've been smoking micarta dust for years. :D

Seriously though, I'm glad you asked because I've learned a lot. I use disposable p100's, but will break down and get a proper respirator.

And I agree, grinding micarta smells terrible.

I gave up grinding it a long time ago - it just makes too big a stink and the wife complains for days... I tend to use rasps and files to shape it nowadays. it works pretty well if you use some aggressive raps for the roughing - like those from Iwasaki. They make tiny shavings rather than dust, which settle to the floor quickly as opposed to going airborne. I can't recommend the Iwasaki files highly enough - great tools.

With eye protection, I'd even recommend getting goggle style glasses. It helps cut down on eye gunk the next morning.
If you want to try making sheaths you can get leather from online knife supply stores if you can't find it locally. You can buy premade ones for under $20. Just get one that is about the right size for your knife and then wet form and dye it.
I've made simple kydex and leather sheaths and I'd say for a beginner they're about the same difficulty. By which I mean you can make a usable sheath from either with simple skills and tools... but better skills and tools are needed to make them really nice looking.
