Since there's a very good thread on swimming pool water, I thought I'd troll for other sources that people don't think about. Yes, the toilet tank and hot water heater have been discussed, but there's another. If, like me, you have kids, and have a portable basketball hoop on the edge of the driveway, don't fill the base with sand, fill it with water! 20 gallons right there. Filling it 3/4 will prevent it from cracking in the winter.

I have a well and pump system that I use for everything water related except human consumption. I have a cooler and a few 20l bottle on hand for drinking.
I'd estimate the well holds about 5000gal, but it is usually at half capacity. An electric pump takes the water up to the roof of my house where it stays in a tank.
From there on everything works by gravity like in a normal house.
The tank is about this size but made of fibreglass

I took a class and the teacher had hiked and trekked for as much as 28 days at a time. While in the Badlands of South Dakota, they would filter water from a stock tank. The stock tanks were by wells that were powered by windmills.
On a side note, he even filtered his water while trekking around South America. He would use a ziplock bag to catch water from a faucet, and put the filter hose in the bag.
