I passed up a 2 HP 1800 rpm motor today because it was 3 phase 230/450. I am wondering if I made a mistake. How hard is it to set up 3 phase 230 in a regular home? I know there are converters, but I can't afford the ones I have seen right now.

Dustin,

Getting 3-phase into your house would likely cost BIG BUCKS, and depending on location and the configuration of the utility's primary lines, may not even be feasible/possible.

However, with a VFD it is easy to convert 240V single-phase to 240V(~230V) three-phase. I have a KB Electronics VFD (model: KBAC-27D) that drives the 2-HP 3-phase 230/460V motor on my grinder. The VFD cost about $340 from state-electric.com (and AFAIK is the exact same drive that Rob sells with his 2-hp VS KMG package). You can find VFDs even cheaper but will likely have to build some sort of dust enclosure if they are not NEMA-4X rated.

Hope this info was helpful.

What will the motor power?
The VFD will give you variable speed which is tha bomd.
I went with the cheaper model and built an enclosure and I am a very happy camper.

Dustin,

3 phase power can be easily achieved with a USED phase converter. I advertised locally that I was looking for a 7.5 HP rotary phase converter and found a guy that sold me one of his spares for $100. It is a Baldor and works great! There are deals out there if you look for them.
