i have seen steel for making knives with sold by the inch and was wondering if there is anything you need to do to it before you make a knife out of it, like heat treat it or something. or can you just grind and go???
thanks

Welcom to the Forums, Go to Dan Gray's sticky about info for new knife makers and spend some time reading the links... There is much more to knife making than can be covered in one post...

Unless it is already hardened, which if you know what type of steel it is you can anneal it, you can pretty much just grind and cut it to shape.

thanks, i was looking at some s30v steel sold by the inch, so you just grind it with the right tools and polish it and kazzam a knife blade??

Doesn't work that way. All will have to be ground then heat treated and finally finished. S30v is not a smart choice for a starter. Definately spend some time on here reading all you can. Maybe get a book and obtain some info before buying supplies.

:D . In theory yes thats the procedure somewhat :). I would advise you to read the sticky thread "***Newbies , Good info Here***" first and/or some books on the subject, you will be surprised even to this very simple looking craft can be approached in many ways like forging, stock removal even making your own steel etc. Sorry when you defined knife making that simple I couldn't stop myself laughing then I thought about it; yes it basically is that simple, at least from outside:rolleyes:... Welcome to the forum BTW...

Welcome. Don't be in such a hurry to just crank out a blade. Take some time to read the sticky at the top of the forum first. I made my first knives with ATS 34 steel. You will find more people heat treat this steel since it is an air hardening steel. Texas knife supply sells this steel and also heat treats it fairly cheap. Goos luck and post some pics of your work in progress.

What I did was buy some steel
buy some files
used a dremmel
dremeled and filed a shape I liked
went to sears bought a grinder
ground the bevels
sent it out for HT
finished the knife best I could with what I had
put the handles and shaped them
sharpened the knife
and voala! a knife.
My arms hurt, the knife wasn't that great but each one is getting better as I go.

Oh yea. after each step I asked questions here and the veteran guys took real good care of me. Just take your time. It took me a couple of months to complete my first. So be patients. Here is a pic of my first and last one completed. I am no where near where I would like to be, but I hope I will one day.

thanks everyone for the advise, ill read that stuff up some more, the only thing i dont think i get is how to heat treat stuff, that sounds complicated. and yes you can use my quote for your sig lol. what is the best way to find metal used for knife making???

Here's some advice, since you are not a paid member here. To search though forums, type the following query into google. Let's say you are searching for how to make a knife out of a file. You would type something like this into google:

make knife from file site:bladeforums.com

The site:bladeforums.com part limits the search results to be from this forum.
