So, I just read bigpatvoodooad's post and thought, I need to do this too....lol (sorry it's so long
)
I've got the same story, kind of. I'm a big gun guy, but as far as knives go haven't really had anything worth having other then the Gerber my step dad gave me back in the 80's when I needed a knife for skinning deer. He spent a while sharpening that Gerber on a Lansky and it was the sharpest knife I ever owned, for about 30 years. I only ever needed to touch it up on a ceramic rod, and even though I had a Lansky (that he had given me) I never tried to sharpen it because I didn't want to wreck it. I never did get a good edge on a knife with that Lansky system until last year....
So a couple years ago my buddy came back from Afghanistan with an Infidel, I was in love, had to have one. But, it was pretty expensive. Then a few months later we were at the gun show and I picked up a FN PS90. As I was walking by a booth some guy saw the PS90 and started talking to me. As were talking I look down and see he's selling an Infidel. His wife see's me looking at it and pulls it out for a look. Anyway, long story short I got an awesome deal on it instead of buying 5.7 ammo that day. That's when I started looking at autos. I bought a nice little Schrade and a couple of others and just kind of played around with them. The bug had bit but I wasn't infected yet....
So I'm an electrical technician, knives come in handy. I was at a site and one of the Sales guys was there with me. I needed to cut something and whipped out my little Schrade auto. He looks up and goes "hey, that's a nice little knife, check mine out". Then he proceeded to pull an Emerson out of his pocket, and it was open already! WTH? I had never seen anything like that...I knew about flippers and autos but this was entirely different. I ended up buying a Beretta Micarta after I handled it at a local gun shop. It was lightweight and really smooth, but I didn't really want to carry it for work so I started looking around. I then found a Kershaw/Emerson CQC 5k. I figured I could carry that out of state and it was cheap enough that if I lost it there was minimum loss and..... I figured I could finally figure out how to use that Lansky and this would be my test knife. But I wanted an Emerson... I finally settled on a Specwar as my first Emerson. I was in the Marines back in the day, so I figured the Specwar had a history I could relate to. It was all downhill from there....
I found this website about the same time I got my Specwar. That's when the bug hit...damn you guys with your Sebenza's, Hinderers and Shirogorov's!!! I never knew I was missing out on so much fun! Some of the knives I've seen on here are just so beautiful, they are really works of art. And so many different kinds, I never had a clue. So I started reading, and read some more. So now I am in full denial that I have a problem. I sharpened everything that would take an edge with my Lansky, except the ones that already had an edge. As I write this I'm waiting on another Emerson to be delivered today, so I can practice sharpening on it. But, I am truly excited as tomorrow I should take receipt of a nice Sebenza 21 I found in the exchange the other day. Even more special is that we share the same DOB, how could I pass it up!
Well, that's my story so far. I'm glad I found such a well laid out and informative site for this awesome hobby...... ~JETNC
