Hey there!

So I'm relatively new to the knife world... Always loved them and had one or two in my pocket, but now I've gone "crazy" as my wife says. Anwyays, I had the opportunity to bust out my knives from storage (my small cheapo collection from high school, 10+ years ago) and most had pitting and rust on the blades...

I know they were cheapos, but I want to avoid this EVER happening to my BM's, MT's, Spyderco's etc.

What kind of maintenance should I be performing? Should they be oiled frequently? If oil/lube on the blade is a must, what types are the best? I've had my eye on some Blue Lube from Benchmade... is it more for moving parts or recommended for coating on the blades to avoid rust?

Thanks so much for your help in advance!

Well for long term storage a generous coating of oil and I like to use "otter box" brand storage case with some desicant thrown in as well. Do not store knives in leather sheaths, they will rust too. If you have any with celluloid handles they will cause rusting to anything withing a few feet of them. The material off gasses continually. For oil I like TriFlo for pivot maintenance and general use. For knives used with food, food grade mineral oil if you are conerned about it. For leather handled knives a good coating of sno-seal before storage does the trick. But a good water proof box with o-ring seal does most of the work.

When my knives need it, I use Rem-Oil. I place a light coating on the blade and if I put it in a pivot I use 1-3 drops.

For my storage I use a 5 drawer Sterilite brand system. I use the top two smaller drawers for my folders and then I use the 2 lower bigger drawers for my fixed blades. My 5th drawer is taken out because my Sterilite sits over a heat vent.

So using run of the mill gun oil is OK? I've got plenty of that and Break Free CLP lying around...

any oil is fine. it repels moisture. Some are better than others yes but any oil will do. I use zoom spout turbine oil & rem oil on mine. I also dont let them lay around not getting used for very long so i cant give ya tips on long term storage
