Noob Question about D2

I have made two knives from 440c. Now I'd like to try using D2. Any way I understand that this steel is air quenched like 440c. What is plate quenching? What is used and are the results the same as just letting the hardened steel just quench in the air? Thanks.

Plate quenching is quenching between two thick aluminum plates. The plates absorb the heat. I use 1 inch thick 5X12 plates bought off ebay.
You can air quench D2 as well using a thin wire rack.
I prefer plate quenching but have quenched D2 on a wire rack and used a small fan to for air movement. I got good results using that method. If you want the RC up above 60-61 you will probably need to cryo the blade before the final temper.

There's a little useful information at the Evenheat website (here.

Also, if there is a metal supply anywhere nearby, you can probably find some remnant pieces of aluminum for a few bucks.

Watch working with D2 also. Everything Ive read states you can harden it accidentally while you're grinding the blade.

That is not going to happen, you would never be able to hold on to the steel if it got that hot.
