I'm just getting started with stock removal. I ordered some 52100 from NJ steel baron and the description states: "Our 52100 comes pickled and annealed." So I'm assuming this steel should come more or less ready to work.

However, other steels like CPM D2 give you the option of ordering them pre-ground, but say nothing about annealing. Does this mean this steel will need to be annealed before it can be used for stock removal?

Pre ground steel bars have a larger tolerance flatness than something that is precision ground. Depends on the manufacturer but a precision ground bar might have a flatness tolerance of maybe .005" while pre ground is .015".

I use a lot of Also's 52100. It is annealed and the pickled term means it is not ground to the exact size. I order .250 and it comes it at .270. It is ready to work though. I order D2 from another source and it is ground clean and the exact thickness they say.
