Noob vise question

Hey guys I was fixing to order some Files, a hack saw, and a vise then I realized looking at the vise, the blade would be vertical. It seems like it would be easier to work on the blade horizontally. I was wondering what some of you have as a set up. I could build a stand at work for it to make it horizontal, but then I was wondering where would I clamp it at so I could work the entire blade? Sorry if these are dumb questions I just wondered what type of setups you guys have, pics would be awesome!

put a 2 x 4 in the vixe

Clamp it down to that.

or cut a slit in the 2x4 insert the blade and squeeze itin the vise.

Ive got two vises bolted to the SIDE of my bench ,and two big ones mounted on top , plus a couple of UN-MOUNTED ones that I bolt on anywhere I need as the situation calls for.
