Noobie here w/ question (tip-up vs. tip-down)

I'm not that fussed about the tip configuration. I've been cut in-pocket by both, worse by tip down though.

Generally I prefer tip up on smaller knives as it is easier for me to open as I draw from the pocket. Larger knives (> 3.5 in blades), I prefer tip down for the same reason provided they have a decent detent / blade retention.

Having said that, if I like the rest of the knife, the clip position (or lack of clip) isn't going to stop me from carrying it, using it and enjoying it.

It all depends on how you angle your hand. If you draw a tip up knife with the back of your hand facing forward, no problem. If you draw a tip down knife by dropping the butt of your palm (like the pictures in this thread), no problem. If you mix these, like drawing a tip down knife while having the back of your hand facing forward, you end up with a backwards knife in your hand.

I don't really have a preference. Both work for me

I've been seriously carrying a knife for every day tasks for about 10 years now. Which is a blink of an eye for some folks on here, but I have had some good time figure out what I really prefer when it comes to what goes in my pocket. I've learned that I really prefer tip down and spine of the blade against the seam of my pocket. This has been the safest and most convenient way for me to carry.

Tip up versus tip down is kind of like The Great TP Debate. It is entirely based on preference with one method working better for certain individuals than the other and those that reside in the opposite camp are completely wrong, for reasons.

:D

I think this needs some video or pics. I have always carried tip up because the knife comes out of my pocket ready to open. Where is others are saying tip down works this way for them. When I grab my knife I put my thumb down the spine and wrap it around to the presentation side of the knife. I put my pinky, ring and middle finger on the clip. As I pull the knife out my pointer finger is perfectly on the spine and ready to flip it open. This method works on flippers and non flippers that open smooth with the thumbstud. I just have to move my pointer finger slightly more around. Regardless I have found it to be the safest way to carry and easiest way to deploy.

I might work on a video with this tonight. Might be the best way to get feedback.

Totally agree. Almost everyone else is talking about tip down being easier, and I got confused and went to look at my EDCs. All but one are tip up, and I much prefer it that way. For me, tip up comes out ready to open without any extra moves, the opposite of what others are saying here. Maybe I just got into the habit and draw my knives in a weird way. *shrugs

I general I don't care.
However, some knives are better one way than the other.

The Spyderco Chinook 3 is comfortable with tip down carry; feels like crap in the pocket with tip up.
The Spyderco Szabo, on the other hand, feels good with tip up carry, but with tip down, it feels like the knife equivalent of a huge turd in your pocket.
Some forum members have mentioned they don't mind putting turds in their pocket, but I am not one of them. ;)
