This is my first post on this forum so please excuse my lack of knowledge.

I was recently given a box of assorted King water stones. I have several fishing fillet knives plus several Japanese and German kitchen knives - most of which are decent quality - and I want to sharpen them freehand using the King stones.

The larger stones are all identified by grit size on the sides however, the two smaller (thinner) ones mounted on identical plastic bases are not. The only difference is in the color of the stones which you can see in the photo.

If you can identify them any info will be appreciated.

King typically uses the darker brown color for their 1000 grit range stones. The lighter stone on the left could be any where between 4000 to 6000 as far as my experiences go.

If you are learning on waterstones, I strongly recommend the Murray Carter blade sharpening DVD set. The information and repeatable approach are wonderful.

Thank you all for your quick and informative feedback.

I look forward to learning a lot in this forum and will check out the Murray carter DVD set.
