noone ever talks about...

try two or three notches up from S&W. Please don't take offense as you may be new to the quality world of knives. There are many other brands out there that are of a much higher quality than SW. For starters try Kershaw, Spyderco, Benchmade to name a few....

yeah, i hear that all the time, but is the market really dominated by those brands? and by what standards? steel, durability... ???

Darrel Ralph has a few S&W designs which have been discussed in the Reviews forum.

Sorry, greenknight for people like this. You didn't ask for a smart-ass comment, you wanted to know something legitimate about a knife MFG.

However, I had a smith & wesson knife which was of poor quality. I guess the reason you don't hear a lot about them in BF is because that MOST are foreign-made knives with no particularly redeeming qualities other than low price-point. My S&W Extreme OPS Tanto was very sharp, but VERY cheap. It only cost about $25 but my cheapest $45 Kershaw Leek will last 10 Times longer.

S&W makes other knives, but I am not very familiar with them. Go online and compare the materials of the S&M with Spyderco or Kershaw and who knows, maybe we are missing out? Good Luck

I wasn't trying to be a prick. My apologies. Too straight forward I suppose. Maybe it's better if I suggest to buy a Spyderco Native for 40 bucks?

Then I guess the answer you were looking for, apart from ripping off other companies' designs, would be that they offer nothing special in terms of materials (blade steels, etc), design, performance, fit and finish, or value.

There are many alternatives to S&W at a similar pricepoint that have superior materials, design and craftsmanship in my opinion.

Opinels - 8-15$
Byrd Knives - 15-25$
Buck 110 and 112 - 30$, sometimes on sale for 20$
Kabar Dozier - 20$
Benchmade Pika - 25$
Spyderco Native - 40$
Kershaw Vapor - 18$
Kershaw Storm - 28$

A lot of these are common, they can be found at Walmart for instance. I'd suggest you take a look at the Buck 110 or 112, or if you want something more modern either of the Kershaws. Hope this helps.

No problem, I've had too many beers!

Great knife suggestion though! Native $40 for S30V:) I still prefer the Kershaw Leek with AO and you can get one on Ebay for $40.

Green,
Do a search on Kershaw Storms and you will come across some pics I took of the Storm II. Pretty cool knife with good Sandvik 13C26 steel!

I was in about your shoes a year or so ago, I had really limited understanding of steels and build quality and couldn't see paying more than about 50 bucks for a knife.

I had a CRKT M1, I loved it, it was built like a tank and looked kool and that was enough for me at the time.

Enter Bladeforums.

Now I understand why people pay for a Spyderco or Benchmade. I respect and understand blade steels and their importance and I live and breathe blades...That will be you soon my friend.

I have a Spyderco Manix now and to compare it to that CRKT, its like a Ford Escort next to a Bentley, they both get you to the Acme, but com'on. Style man, style.

Welcome by the way.

Glad to get along. I think I'm just in a pissy mood trying to recover from my all night binge at niagra falls last night. Going with 2 guys that bring a few thousand for one night of fun is quite the experience.

hmmnn... this thread is going everywhere.
my next purchase will either be the BM gamer combo edge, or one of the spyder salts... i prefer fixed blades, but they are a hassle for edc...

Pretty much. I have a pre-Taylor Cutlery folder that I like, but never carry. The damn thing is huge, and doesn't take and hold an edge as well as other knives in it's price range. The S-30V Native will surpass any S&W folder on all counts.

Yup. So will many other knives. But my second "real" knife, behind a Spyderco Q, was a G-2 (or Gin-1) Native. Perfect inexpensive quality all around EDC to start off with.

The Spyderco salts look interesting, totally impervious to rust and all but I dont know how H1 steel performs. Does it hold an edge well and sharpen up well or is it just great cause it wont rust?

Guess I'm going to need to get one and find out.:D
