Normal click noise from a Ritter?

Is it normal for there to be a click noise when opening at Benchmade Mini RSK Mk1? The noise happens when opening the knife, and the blade reaches the first quarter open or so. Some are telling me its normal, and I am not sure. Thanks.

Well, I'll be darned. My Mini clicks as well. Never noticed before.

It appears to occur when the lock bar goes over the "closed" hump (for lack of a better description) and changes direction of movement.

Since I've been carrying mine for over a year, the phenomena must not be an indicator of something wrong.

In my experience (with both a BM 710 and a BM 722), that "clicking" is indicative of a broken omega spring. Try opening the knife, then try pulling back on the axis bar (closing the knife) using just one side of the axis bar. Try this on both sides of the axis bar. See if one side appears to be dragging (lacks spring resistance). Identify which side has the broken spring. Send knife to Benchmade.

Is there a detent in the tang area to keep the balde from sliding out on it's own?

The detent is in the shape of the tang, which rests against the axis bar while in the closed position. Spring pressure on the axis bar, which rests against the tang of the blade, prevents the knife from opening without force applied to open it. Once the blade tang passes a certain point (it depends on the model, but for most of my axis BMs, it appears to be about 40 degrees), the pressure that biases the blade towards the closed position is gone.

No.

Not a broken spring. I've had my Mini apart and obviously the springs were fine.

Any one got any mini - Griptillians to verify if they do it clicking thing?

The very slight "click" occurs as the blade opens and the Axis lock bar moves over the "hump" in the tang that serves to bias the blade toward closing and reverses direction to move towards the locked position. The actual loudness and noticability of this varies somewhat between knives and is most obvious on a knife with no lubricant on the tang/lock bar interface. However, it will virtually always be there to one degree or another. Some owners also notice more than others as well, so that the variability is increased. It is much more noticeable in the Mini vs. the full size because of the relative size of the hump and the angles involved.

As with all my RSK knives, Aeromedix stands behind it with their 30 day no questions asked return policy if you are dissatisfied.

I own, or have owned:
710HS
805AFCK
705-401
940Ti-01
940D2CF

All have that "click" when opening. Fresh lube where Critter specified reduces or eliminates it.

Thank you very much for the information. When I open the knife quickly, using just the thumb.. no flick... the knife hesitates right at that spot making me believe it is not normal. I plan on asking for a replacement as otherwise, I really like the knife.

Thanks everyone for their input.

It's a "snick" not a "click", no? That's perfectly normal with the Axis Lock and it's not a defect.

Try a drop of quality lube on the Axis bar.
